780 Ti keeps a slight lead despite it being a lowclocked version and not fulfilling its true potential you should say. GTX 780 meanwhile is a totally stripped down version of GK110 and not overly relevant to me - it certainly wasn't a good buy compared to R9 290/290X at its time, but it was also released before them, sou you'd not know the 290 is better for the same price. People always have to remember release and relevance times if they talk about the past, out of context, it doesn't make much sense to talk about old GPUs. Fact is, the 780 Ti was released to counter the 290X, because the 290X was actually faster than Titan and 780 or comparable to the Titan at least, with the problem being the Titan was overprized at a 1000 bucks. The 780 Ti did that and it is still a very capable GPU today, nothing changed.Oops i didnt notice the 4k part. It seems the 390x review on tpu doesnt have an all resolutions graph. I screenshot the first glaph which normally relative all reaolutions. Heres 1080p graphs.View attachment 92765 View attachment 92766
The 780 ti keeps up a slight lead but its definitely smaller. Meanwhile look at the widened gap between the 290x and gtx 780. Also do note that im not specifically pointing out the 390x and rather i used that review as a point of reference to have a year later review. Also as you mentioned, amd being better at 4k/high resolutions back then is also a statement to be made in itself. A person who invested in an 290x, especially custom ovetclocked models, are pretty much still able to play most games flawlessly similar or even better to a 580/580X user. And i remember a time when you could buy a 290x for less than 300$. I doubt we can same the same thing about a gtx 780 user.
Here a custom 780 Ti wins vs. 390 (despite 390 being a generation ahead, released over a year later than this 780 Ti) in BF1:

It is certainly a good game to compare performances of both sides.
"Fine Wine" isn't a myth, but also comes down to underperforming drivers of AMDs in the past. The issue is mostly fixed now, I don't see Vega getting a lot of performance uplifts through drivers today, that basically means it's already runing peak performance from day 1 besides its additional features that are maybe not used today. But that was never a given anyway.
