Looks like I'm going to be right in saying 'bandwidth starved, cut down piece of junk'

256 vs 320 is huge

The people crying over GDDR5 vs GDDR5x... just OC the fucking memory oh look add to that a core clock bump and its 99% GTX 1080 even when OC both. People act like GDDR5 didnt overclock well lol.

1070TI might have only 80% of the 1080s memory bandwidth but generally speaking a 10-19% OC on GDDR5 is the normal range. at which point memory bandwidth issue becomes pointless.

No because the 1080 already benefits from the memory OC, and 10% is about as much as you'll get out of 9Gbps GDDR5 as well as GDDR5x.

The loss in shaders is not relative to the loss in bandwidth on this card. The 660ti had a similar issue and that wasn't fine wine.

WIth an OC on the memory and the GPU you would be hard pressed to ever notice the difference. gameplay performance wise its likely going to be less than 5%.

Yes, all I can say is, time will tell, in my experience, cards like this do turn obsolete quite a bit faster. Its not a massive gap I agree, but then again neither is the price.

Its unlikely best case scenario, GTX 1080 with GDDR5x oced gets 385 GB/s bandwidth.
GTX 1070 best case scenario with GDDR5 hits around 310-320 GB/s thats about 10 GB/s Bandwidth short of a reference 1080.

Looking at W1zzards review, of the MSI 1080 GDDR5x Gaming Plus a 5% clock speed bump and 10% higher memory resulted in a 7-11% performance gain.

Judging by the OC numbers the gains, Nvidia' GPUs on average still scale better with GPU clock than Memory clock. Considering the 1070 Ti features just shy of a 1080s core count and with an OC on the memory bringing it withing spitting distance of the 1080 as well. It goes without saying this 1070 Ti will function 98% like a GTX 1080 but for less money. Considering overclocked 1070s already rival or beat a stock 1080 this is pretty much a no brainer.

That said when Nvidia does stuff like this its the end of that GPU cycle. This model will have a shorter lifespan simply because new GPUs will replace it. While the 1070 and 1080 have been around for ages the 1070 Ti will be around for 6 months or so before we all hunker down and wait for the next gen.

On top of that due to the cut down nature of the GPU its likely making better use of defective dies instead of being a 1070 they can make a 1070Ti jack up the price and reuse defective dies and make a larger profit. They will likely let 1080 stock dry up while the 1070 Ti takes its place.

I'm expecting that GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 will be EOL'd as a result of this. Since GTX 1070 Ti (should be) good enough to beat Vega 56 and GTX 1080 Ti is good enough to beat Vega 64, while the GTX 1060 and lower trade blows with Polaris, it doesn't really make sense for NVIDIA to have three GP104 SKUs. Especially if GP104 yields are good enough that most chips produced are at or better than GTX 1070 Ti level, which is what I'm reading between the lines.

GTX 1070 Ti and GTX 1080 Ti will be good enough to see NVIDIA through until Volta's launch, plus EOL'ing 1070 and 1080 will allow partner inventories to draw down so that they won't have a glut of cards to dispose of when Volta arrives.

I have a 1070 theres no way anyone can oc a 1070 on air and beat a stock 1080 because a stock 1080 ocs itself to 1800 anyways but even stock no chance lol

Isn't that the point - drop down to 10Gbps and run again and the clock speed bump performance diminishes too. Its a sign the shader count is already a tiny bit more than it needs; so with marginally less shaders but an 60Gbps bandwidth gap, it won't be 'close' - there is a 10% gap already on shader count and a higher % on bandwidth. Also I doubt these will clock higher, while a 1070 generally does gain marginally higher OCs (50-100mhz).

This card really caters as a stopgap 60fps 1440p card to fill the 30% gap between 1070 and 1080. Which means that if you buy it for that purpose, in a year you'll have 50 fps on recent games.

Reviews will show the gap to be tiny. No different than back during the Nvidia 200 series with the 275 and 285 release. the 275 took the place of the 280 and the 285 set a new upper limit.

I have a 1070 theres no way anyone can oc a 1070 on air and beat a stock 1080 because a stock 1080 ocs itself to 1800 anyways but even stock no chance lol

W1zzards own reviews show about 15% - 20% gap between 1070 and 1080 Overclocked 1070s already get within 5%.of a 1080 now add about 500 more shaders going from 75% of the 1080s shaders to 95%. Memory bandwidth really only matters at 4k and a 1080 isnt enough for 4k fluid gaming anyway not without severe trade offs. As such I expect at 1080p and 1440p a 1070Ti will apples to apples with a GTX 1080 offer 95% of the others performance. 4K will likely see the gap widen but with memory OCed I expect the gap to be around 5-8%.

Just have to wait for the reviews but thus far I have been pretty accurate guessing next gen GPU performance so I am interested to see if that continues.

I just dont see the point of this... like at all.
We will see a new generation soon enough, if you want to compete more then drop the prices a little of what you have and there you go.

Why release another card for that little market in between the two....sigh
Because of the huge pile of "failed" 1080 GPUs ? ;)

Beat it not quite match it to the point you couldn't tell the difference 1070 OC vs 1080 Stock you bet.

This might be self justification but I just bought a 1080 for 450 brand new. OCing the 1070 to keep up with the 1080 doesn't take in the fact you can OC the 1080 also. I'm not denying the 1070 is almost as fast but, it's just that.....almost. Plus with 1080s at 450 I don't know why you would want a 1070ti.........unless for mining.

Keep in mind when the 1070 launched it was for around $400 vs the 1080 sitting at $600-700.

Now yeah the prices are still kinda fucked with the NVIDIA cards all priced near each other.

Cheapest 1070 is around $390
Cheapest 1080 is around $490
Cheapest 1080 Ti is around $715

when the price difference was $200 the 1070 made sense you could OC it and get 1080 stock performance for a whole lot less. Now with the prices being so close the extra 20% in terms of money spent directly gives a buyer 20%+ more performance when OC is taken into account.

Previous the 1070 was the better buy now that situation has reversed. 1070 Ti will likely split the difference. What everyone forget is GPU VRAM saw a price hike due to shortages. My guess is GDDR5 is far cheaper than GDDR5x so NVIDIA and its 1070Ti are basically just 1080 core with 1070 memory. To make a cheaper GPU which then undercuts the Vega 56 and Vega 64 by offering performance in the middle while being far cheaper to produce.

Just because faster memory can give some gains doesn't mean a card can't get even more performance by increasing another performance aspect. GTX 1070 is not bottlenecked by memory bandwidth, which is why most factory overclocked AIB cards focus on overclocking the GPU, while there are rarely significant gains from overclocking memory.

Yes, all I can say is, time will tell, in my experience, cards like this do turn obsolete quite a bit faster. Its not a massive gap I agree, but then again neither is the price.
That's silly. This card is still better than what AMD has to offer, and past Nvidia cards has turned out to be great investments.

Such a small gap there 1070-1080... from below 60 fps to avg 65. Like I said, if you start reducing the 1080 in some way, it'll rapidly fall below the experience you bought it for and becomes a 'good card for 1080p'.

it's 12 frames faster for almost the same price.
