AMD to introduce 45nm process AM3 CPU family in 2H08

I was hoping they would be released sooner, so I could consider using one when I finally ditch Skt 478 this fall. I definitely don't want to wait a year to see if they're something I want.

What difference does that make if performance is not different or there is no reductions of heat, etc? Some people forget that die shrinks only help reduce manufacturing costs. Unless there is something arch difference between 60nm and 45nm it's pointless to assume something "good" from the Consumer's point of view. Heck, you are still at their discretion to actually lower the price. There is nothing automatic here that will benefit the consumer, if so please link me.

Doesnt lower nm mean that theres room for a larger number of circuits/transistors?
I was under that impression, since more transistors = more performance/calculations?

There is no direct relation with transistors and performance.(there is actually a close relationship with transistors and heat output, along with overall maximum clockspeed.)

However, more room for transistors gives a lot more options in design for complexity.. and features.

And cache.

hehe. when i put my rig together a year ago i got the x1800xt 512 thinking i would buy another one to form crossfire by early 07. now its not worth it since dx10 stuff is out. it is very hard to keep up when you are living on a realistic budget. (i.e. mortgage, car payment, utilities, student loan)

well thats what I originally Planned.

When I bought my X1800XT they were pretty much all being phased out so they were dirt cheap. but it was a decision between a X1900GT or an X1800XT & everyone told me to go for the X1800XT. was thinking since they were phasing them out. X1800 master cards would also be dirt cheap but they all vanished before I could get my hands on them

but I mean...If the 'high end' version of the Nvidia 8600GT's get any cheaper I might nab myself 2

That's exactly what happened to me.

And about running 2 8600's, wouldn't buying 1 8800GTS 640MB be the better idea? When the 8600 prices drop, it stands to reason the the 8800 would as well.
