PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Ditches Amazon Web Services for Microsoft Azure

Earlier this year, Bluehole confirmed their partnership with Microsoft to bring the popular PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) title to the Xbox One console. However, their relationship didn't end there. During a recent Microsoft quarterly earnings conference call, the company's CEO Satya Nadella stated the following:

"Gaming pushes the boundaries of hardware and software innovation, with some of the most CPU and GPU-intensive applications and content, giving us a huge opportunity in the cloud. As one example, PUBG Corp., with the hit game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, is not only partnering to make Xbox the exclusive console at launch, but is also running on Azure."

This move is most likely part of the deal with Microsoft to make PUBG an "exclusive" title on the Xbox One. By keeping the game on the console, Microsoft could facilitate Bluehole with the necessary server infrastructure at a discounted price. Microsoft Azure is starting to become popular as it's also home to other major titles like Titanfall, Hitman, Halo 5: Guardians, and Forza Motorsport 7.

That's actually quite interesting, wonder how far the stability and capacity can be ramped up compared to the issues with AWS.

Eh, I suppose I don't care one way or the other. The game, granted is still "alpha", but it has so many issues. Constant synching problems, loot not spawning right away, easy for people to cheat, the allowed use of Reshade.....I've kind of stopped playing. It's not fun when you're killed by a hacker or you loot half a dozen places and end up with nothing much more than a large amount of clothes, boots, fingerless gloves, level 1 helmets and weapon attachments.

I can't imagine this was an aws scaling or stability issue. They are a lot more nimble and have a lot more overhead than one would imagine...

Is there somewhere which detailed the issues?

I ask as i (used to) work at AWS. ;)

What a stupid thing to do, doing simple things like patching their game just several degrees more difficult because now they've inserted Microsoft as a middle man. Heads up if there is a gamebreaking bug, or severe balance issue introduced after a patch don't expect it to be fixed in a timely manner just be prepared to live with it for weeks or a month until the next patch.

That's honestly exactly what I would have thought too, so it left me somewhat confused as I thought AWS would have massive scalability potential.

All I know is that their Asian servers, quote from this article, had an issue where the "cloud service ran out of capacity". That and their constant issues but the majority of issues could be moreso related to their own development.

Its not really alpha. They did an alpha before launching early access. Its technically open beta at this point.

That's even worse. They have a lot (a lot) of work to do to get the game to an official release. Right now I'd put the game development at the same level as 7 Days to Die - sure, the games can be played, but they have a lot of glaring issues to resolve before they should be officially released.

Doesn´t change the fact the game is buggy, repetitive, random and very unoptimized. I think is a matter of time before the big sharks release a proper polished battle royale game, and pubg is gone for good.

Unoptimized in what sense? Server performance and netcode? Sure. client is fine. As soon as they released the patch to take advantage of more CPU cores my FPS doesnt go below 100 now, and i have all high and ultra settings.

Its also EARLY FUCKING ACCESS. People who buy games in early access should know what comes with that. Its not a finished product, but clearly its good enough to reign in 2 million concurrent users consistently.

And you consider 100fps a good mark? in 2017 on a PC game? I run all my games at 144fps minimum to take advantage of high refresh monitors. When I ADS on pubg my fps are all over the place.

Game type? You talk like pubg is the ultimate cpu bound game or what? You even know what a raid on WoW is? Go figure.

Pubg is just an unoptimized crap that will die as soon as the big sharks enter the battle royale scene. Fortnite already stole a lot of players and it isnt even a good game. We talk in 1 year (battlefield BR, cod br, blizzard br etc etc)

Well Fortnite has graphics that are damn near equivalent to modded Minecraft, also made by the same studio who made the engine for the game. Bluehole originally had to do some work arounds to limitations of UE4, since it is not meant for that type of game. But they took a chance because it was a non-proprietary engine with a ton of documentations, so anything they needed to do could be done relatively quickly. Epic Games has made a ton of changes to UE4 to accomodate for the demands of a battle royal game when they made fortnite. Bluehole will get those changes when the official update to the engine is sent out to all studios using it.

Of course if a AAA studio dives into battle royal genre they will likely beat out pubg, but those AAA studios also have far more talent, and resources at their disposal. PUBG started from a studio with less than 40 developers. It expanded to over 100 within 6 months of it being in early access and has made leaps and bounds in client performance.

Pubg isnt that unoptimized, the only people i see even mentioning those words these days also have computers from what is considered now as the stone age, an expect devs to bend over backwards for them and their dual core rigs with GPUs from 5 years ago.

Again this game is early access. Only has about a year and a half of development time under its belt. It has improved far more in such short amount of time in comparison to H1Z1 that has been in early access for 4 years and they have made damn near zero progress on that particular title.

Simply put, your expectations for an unfinished product is stupidly high.
