The Creative Assembly, one of the foremost developers of Real Time Strategy (RTS) experiences, has announced a spin-off series based on the award-winning Total War series. Saga starts a series of spin-offs for the Total War game series, with The Creative Assembly saying that this series focuses on "exciting pivotal moments in history rather than whole historical eras."

Thrones of Britannia already has a Steam page, which points towards a 2018 release. Exploration of key flashpoints and distinct locations throughout history is the focus of these, with Total War series director Mike Simpson saying that "Unlike our era-spanning titles, we're putting defined geographical areas under the microscope, building super-detailed campaign maps with a strong cultural focus and flavor that players can dive into," Simpson said in a news release. "This will complement our broader-scope titles perfectly."

The game's Steam Page reads:

"The year is 878 AD, the embattled English king Alfred the Great has mounted a heroic defense at the battle of Edington, and blunted the Viking invasion. Chastened - but not yet broken - the Norse warlords have settled across Britain. For the first time in nearly 80 years, the land is in a fragile state of peace.

Throughout this sceptred isle, the kings of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales sense a time of change approaching; a time of opportunity. There will be treaties. There will be war. There will be turns of fortune that become the stuff of legend, in a saga that charts the ascent of one of history's greatest nations.

Kings will rise. One will rule."

lol.. Just binged on the Last Kingdom (great show btw). Cool time period though. I didn't play the series until Medieval (the first one), but in a way, that's too broad. This sounds like a more tightknit setting, like Shogun..with the flavor of Medieval.

Well this remind me Medieval II kingdoms, it had Britannia campaign but the year was 1258. One of the best total war games ever.

I wouldn't get my hopes up... but it really wouldn't be Alfred's England without it.

Not the period I am very interested in, but going to try this for sure. They seem to have learned from Warhammer's, so I expect quite smooth game.

There's a good variety here for a game though. Norse, Saxons, Celts, Christian and Pagan both going strong...

Everyone should watch the Last Kingdom though. Maybe it'll get you hyped.

I am looking forward to this. Those of us older will remember this time period and setting perfectly in CA's library. This will be a remake of Medieval TW: Viking Invasion.

The Viking Invasion expansion pack was actually the only part of MTW I enjoyed playing. Will definitely scoop this up as I love this time period.

Aye, that was a good show. I also binge-watched the shit out of it and am waiting on Season 3.

As for this announcement, I am excited about this series. I'm very happy with the Total War series so far and am glad they are choosing to focus on regional conflicts of Britain for this time period. This should be good.

Very excited about this, since I been a fan of CA but not their marketing. I am still pretty sad about Rome2 and Atilla, both games had the potential to be great but just ended up half baked and later on tossed away for Warhammer.
I just hope this new game will be more optimized and deliver greater gaming experience than previous games.

I really enjoyed Rome 2. Most games can be easily identifiable as 'could have been better' and Rome 2 was no exception, but I wouldn't say half-baked.
