DigiTimes, citing sources from the "upstream supply chain", has advanced a report stating that global branded motherboards' shipments are expected to decline by 10% YoY in 2018. The report further states that the DIY PC market is expected to shrink by up to 15% this year. These decreases follow a down trendline starting in 2013, where motherboard shipments peaked at 75 million. This number has seen continuous reductions since then, with less than 50 million shipments in 2016, and decreased further towards an estimated 43 million units in 2017.

Motherboard makers are looking towards the still expanding gaming sector (and gaming motherboards) as a way to increase shipments and revenue, due to higher ASP (average selling price) of all things gaming branded. Manufacturers are looking at an uphill battle against ASUSTeK, however, which has done a tremendous job in marketing and brand recognition with its ROG line of gaming products, and has consequently locked in around 70% of the gaming product market.

Time to consolidate and make fewer board models, don't need 50 options per socket guys... need quality options per socket.

The quantity of boards has skyrocketed since 775... the quality has diminished. Every brand has lemon models simply because they spam the markets and cannot afford to test everything. That has to end... I am sure intel tick tocking through boards hasn't helped matters. All we have are initial quality reviews...

I would say that some of the downturn is DIY shaken by DDR4 and Graphic card prices.

Ha! I know right. Give me a decent color scheme, rock solid stability and a good set of features. No thank you to the LED craze. I did that on my first PC and was over it fast.

Asus, Asrock, MSI, Gigabyte, all need to trim the product stack across both Intel and AMD lines. GA and MSI especially...

Not surprised.

Tech sites which cater to tech and "gamers" hardly do reviews other then Z & X boards. Retention and new comers just see price either flat or escalating. When is the last time non-overclock boards for Intel were reviewed in-depth through their line-up on a popular tech site ?

The products are out there but sites and reviewers just focus mainly on Z & X while the H & B boards hardly ever get noticed. Feeds into the higher price & perception that H & B arent good with their audiences.

Since intel makes good enough prceossors for years and years why do people need to buy a new motherboard and processor. They just upgrade the graphics card. Prices on memory doesnt help either, 8 months ago I was able to buy 4gb ddr4 sticks for $25, today they are $52. I am talking about 4gb sticks for mining rigs that dont need super fast speeds.

It's not the sites or the reviewer's fault unless they purchase samples and I know of very few that do that.

Sites might be dependent on the "Free samples / Loaners" but it doesn't mean they can not mention the alternatives of B & H series boards if they are not sent to them. Most just pretend they don't exist not even mentioning them in their reviews, budget or even conclusions.
