Steam has revealed the top selling/highest grossing games on its platform for the year 2017, and with come some surprises, and some non-surprises as well. The distinction between top selling and highest grossing is a needed one, if you look at the top Platinum tier. There are two free-to-play games on it, which really isn't much when you consider that the category itself contains 12 titles. Still, it does go to show how correct monetization of free-to-play games leads to impressive earnings for companies. Joining those two titles are the usual multiplayer galore of titles. The hit phenomenon Player Unknown's Battlegrounds stars in 4th place, behind H1Z1, Grand Theft Auto V, and Rocket League. When it comes to single-player games, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt holds its own on 6th place in the Platinum list, a remarkable feat if one considers the game was originally released in May 2015, and hasn't seen added content for a year now.

Assassin's Creed Origins and Call of Duty: WWII still managed to carve their place in the gold tier of the earnings tier, despite only being available for sale during the last months of 2017, which by itself shows the juggernauts these games are for the industry. I'll leave the rest of the titles for your perusal, with a last note: Arkane's Prey and Dishonored II only made the Bronze tier of the list, and Machine Games' Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus made the list as well. These are AAA single-player experiences that didn't manage any better than the Gold tier, alongside games such as Friday the 13th. Granted that Steam is a single platform, but still - food for thought.

Wonder where The Witcher 3 stands if you count GOG sales.

Why would you buy a DRM free game on a DRM client? I really hope they sell the shit out of Cyberpunk 2077 on their own client. I'd love to see them market GOG for Cyberpunk really hard so Valve doesn't take 30% from these great people.

Good question, but probably very respectable. After the first year GOG sales of TW3 were more than Steam. That was the last time numbers were released by both, IIRC

I have access to regional pricing on Steam and not on GOG.

I think he's implying that he's an [redacted] that buys games in alternative regions because it works out cheaper when bought in foreign currencies.

Rockstar still the golden goose. It's amazing really. GTA5 only sort of dropped it's price last year. Few other games last out that long at full price. And it'll still crushes other titles (cumatively) at these lower prices.

So you assume I am [redacted] whatever that is. Based on no proof, that's very [redacted]. I do buy games in India as I do reside in the region!
