MicroCenter Sells Graphics Cards at MSRP - If You Also Buy Other Components

MicroCenter is known for its wacky deals on PC hardware, notably selling processors at below-MSRP rates. In a bid to ensure gamers - and not miners - have access to graphics cards, the retailer is willing to sell you one graphics card at MSRP, provided that the order (cart) includes a processor, a motherboard, a memory kit, and a power-supply (some of the key ingredients of a PC). This offer should help people building gaming PCs from scratch, but not so much people upgrading their graphics cards. It's still way better than how retailers from across the big pond are making sure crypto-mining doesn't irreversibly damage the gaming PC ecosystem. To ensure miners don't swallow up cards at MSRP by bundling them with cheap entry-level hardware, the offer can be redeemed once per delivery address.

Best Buy is another retailer selling graphics cards at prices close to MSRP. Amazon and Newegg are making a killing. This is a particularly terrible time to buy/upgrade your graphics cards, as bulk purchases from crypto-currency miners have caused a triple-digit inflation in prices. If your 2-year old graphics card can't cope with today's AAA games, maybe it's time to buy a console, or play a game IRL (like handball).

Most retail stores in my country have been doing this since the first crypto wave.
Problem is, most of the time they still short on supplies since miners will go to major distributors and buy GPUs in bulk right from the ship containers.

since gaming hardware can be used for mining buying a full kit is not conclusive evidence to separate the two, ram can be sold off at high prices and you can still find a market for "brand new" second hand goods...it feels like extortion for shop to clear stock by offering msrp just for cards

It will work only if said person is upgrading full PC rather than in bits and bobs. Anyways that still leaves the problem with online retailers selling GPU at exorbitant prices.

Yeah, but what if I just want to buy ONE god damn graphic card? I change my platform like once every 5-7 years. I change graphic cards pretty much every 2 years. So, how am I suppose to buy other component next to graphic card if all I want is a graphic card? That's still just dumb even if it's a protective measure to help gamers.

If you're so against this so called "communism", then why doesn't the capitalistic side of graphic card makers just ensures there are enough cards for dumb miners to buy them all and still have plenty for gamers? Eeeeeh, I know why, because crypto shit is volatile and can end over night, making them have tons of cards no one would buy. Where gaming consumers are steady and predictable. That's why no one ramps up the supply. What kind of rubbish capitalism is that, consumers want more, but they don't supply it? Hm.

it all has to be worked out months in advance.. maybe up to a year i am not sure exactly.. but they cant just magic up fore-knowledge so in some ways it a guess..

get it wrong and you ether have a glut of inventory or a shortage.. currently we have a shortage..

what i do find odd is the hatred conjured up as regards gpu shortages but very little said about the huge ram price increases.. maybe its simply down to having someone obvious to blame..

as to my comments about communism and capitalism.. that just how it works when there is shortage of something.. i wasnt trying to show bias ether way..

tis a world wide problem.. you have picked the wrong time to do major PC upgrades.. maybe picked is the wrong word but ether way it aint a good time for the high end PC industry..

Tempted in picking up a RX 580 at my MicroCenter - just to see what AMD has to offer since I've never used ATI/AMD before - and selling my spare 980Ti off for around $500.......not sure if I'm really that bored or not.

True, but the spare 980Ti doesn't get much use. I could get a new card and put around $100 in my pocket while keeping a similar performance. The RX 580 is more than capable of gaming maxed out on 1080p, which is what the TV is that the computer is hooked up to. I've played Grim Dawn and Dying Light on the computer here and there, but it mostly sees action from Minecraft right now. I just want something capable as a solid backup should my main 980Ti kick the bucket.

The spare 980Ti is just about at the end of it's warranty - about 6 months to go - would be nice to have a newer GPU simply just for the sake of having a good warranty to fall back on.

Also, the mining craze won't last forever (I hope) and maybe I should take advantage of the fact I can sell my 980Ti for almost the same I spent on it 2.5 years ago.

yep, went there today and picked up a Zotac 1080Ti for $981, only 1 per customer per month, they check ur ID and log u in the system

What this really amounts to is:

"Buy a video card get free CPU+RAM+power supply" since that will all add up to the overinflated price of the GPU anyway if sold alone. Pretty good deal IMHO, might as well have the other parts to either use or sell off since they are technically "free" with the purchase of an overpriced GPU

well, it has to stop from joining new miners... and then things will set back again to a normal prices... but now, when everybody began mining, i don't see things to go better in the bear future... people didn't learn that there is no free launch....
