Intel Plans $5 billion Investment in Israel Plant for Expanded 10 nm Production

Israeli Economy Minister Eli Cohen today revealed that after talks with Intel, the company shared plans for a $5 billion investment in its Kiryat Gat plant, located in southern Israel. The Kiryat Gat plant currently features tools and manufacturing facilities that allow only 22 nm chips to be produced - definitely not cutting edge, but still somewhat relevant in the semiconductor market for simpler technologies. Intel's investment would bring this plant's capabilities to 10 nm manufacturing levels. The minister further stated that Intel will begin its investment this year, and was looking towards a full 2020 payoff with increased manufacturing capabilities. Naturally, with investment comes tax opportunities and government incentives, and Intel is expected to receive a 10% grant from the Israeli government to help it in this investments' funding.

Seems dumb to me, since they just broke ground on a $7 billion facility in Arizona for 7nm chips. Why not just be bullish on 7nm and use this $5 billion (which is being invested in a unstable part of the world, gee I wonder if politics had some influence on this decision) on top of the $7 billion in Arizona to just spearhead straight to 7nm and destroy AMD before AMD even got started. That is what I would do anyway, but I am not a businessman, so eh.

Intel can't even sell quad cores on 10nm lol. They're far behind and won't admit how bad it is. New node will be even worse. They can't jump ahead. They're stuck on monolithic dies for the time being.

Intel just came clean about their 10nm problems. I guess it's the lure of getting to use free (read: someone else's) money.

Who is ahead of Intel?
In terms of density TSMC 16nm/12nm and Samsung 14nm/12nm is just a little denser than Intel 22nm. Intel 14 nm is nearly "one whole step" ahead of the competition. Intel 10nm will be a larger jump than 22nm->14nm, so Intel "10nm" might be closer to 1.5 "steps" ahead of TSMC "7nm".

It will not surprise me if we see 3-4 iterations on Intel 10nm for desktop products, and there will be various chipsets and more produced on 10nm.
