Even as most users are still transitioning from their Full HD panels to 4K ones (less than 40% of users have a 4K-capable panel), the 8K panel onslaught should begin as early as the first half the current year. AU Optronics, one of the world's foremost panel makers, is expected to start shipping 8K-enabled panels between the 65-85 inch range in the first half of this year, thus moving the goalpost once again on what the top of the line in the display market is.

Liao Wei-lun, president of AUO's video products business group, said that global sales of 65- and 70-inch TVs and display products are expected to grow 40% and 50% on year, respectively, in 2018. As yields have improved, so has pricing come down, which means users will be looking to upgrade their panels to higher diagonal sizes. But the bigger the size, the higher the resolution of the panel has to be, and that's where AUO wants to do business. AUO expects the penetration rate of 65-inch and above sizes of 8K TVs will start gaining momentum in 2018 and reach 10% in 2020. Naturally, AUO plans to start 8K panel production on the higher margin products - high diagonal TVs - and will scale down from there, eventually hitting PC monitor's screens. Maybe by that time we'll have graphics card options that can actually push that gargantuan number of pixels.

Price and Availability of Cards capable of 4K is Hindering the adoption of 4K let alone progressing to 8K
because of that Price and Availability of Cards Problem MOST PEOPLE ARE NOT UPGRADING

got to give them promo credit for trying to push the market but its failing because of the Card market

The crazy GPU market has not been the only factor in upgrading. I have been looking for a new monitor and am stalled by the lack of choices.
Why can I buy 4K TV at 120Hz such as: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIADM25R29274&cm_re=4K_TV-_-89-356-307-_-Product
for less money that the cost of a monitor. The price does not scale. The hardware in the TV, power board, logic board, glass, added shipping cost based on size and other factors, can't be far off from what's used in the monitor. So where is the value and why can't the GPU's keep up? What's the holdup?
A 240Hz 55" is $730.00, a GPU and 27" monitor can be twice that amount. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...474748 600054193&IsNodeId=1&Description=4K TV

Exactly. And there's also the lack of 8k content. No physical media supports it and the vast majority of the worlds users don't have the internet speed to stream it(8k stream = 110mbps min per stream). The appeal of 4k just isn't great and 8k? Forget it. Too soon for anyone but the most elite and even then, it'll mostly go unutilized for a long while.

in this thread: people that dont use their OS to display screens of content, only consume media or games with some kind of refusal to use half or quarter resolution in them to gain tons of performance

edit: seriously, i'd get a ps4pro just to run games better at 1080 rather than plain ps4 or for a 4k monitor, i probably wouldnt replace blurays or past movie files that are in 1080 as they are pretty decent, so on a 4k or 8k i'd watch the same 1080 source, basically 1080 is quite fine for plenty of content no matter what the monitor is

Oh? Are you sure?
yes? there's no reason to be so strongly talking about price/availability of high performing gpus (what games, is this even 60hz?), high bitrate videos, high speed internet, how elite it all is... you want to stop advancing? large tvs ant something everyone buys either, no matter which resolution

what does a new panel resolution (that takes months for brands to integrate into models) have to do with any of that when an OS contains multiple windows and objects, when modern OSs are designed for 2x+ 'retina' displaying for super clear text/elements, when this is about 65-85inches, when video formats are the same ratio & within whole number multipliers, when it's perfect for offices/schools/presentations without having giant pixels... funny thing is i enjoy seeing my pixels on 24" 1080p

Not at all. However, advancements should make sense. An 8k display is a solution without a problem. Currently, UHD is only just gaining traction. 8k makes no sense at all with no tangible content to take advantage of it. If your argument is an 8k OS desktop, that is a good perspective, even if it's almost the only one. A pair of 1080Ti's or Titan's in SLI will struggle to push such a desktop with a lot of Windows open and visible, to say of nothing of mainstream GPU's.

Sounds like they didn't get the memo about people caring more about colors and contrast ratio, etc rather than resolution.

With graphic card prices what they are now and will be going forward I would surprised if any body will be able to afford the GPU power to drive 8K monitors other than the select few.

a single model PANEL or two from a company that makes tons of different sized panels & you think they dropped everything... you people are insane

if you're not spending money on manufacturing, why does it matter? 4k wasnt usable in the early days either, two cables with vertical tearing & 30fps, no content, most people's internet sucks even now, ps4pro games are mostly under 4k, people arent replacing their existing 1080 blurays

two max size gpus are needed to display a few 2d windows on screen!? that's seriously news to me, i am trying to find info about this, but nvidia's site says a single 1080 can output 8k at 60hz... since when are a few windows such an extravagant load? you could open 4x more windows at 4k to get the same effect couldnt you? it's still not a game

advancements should make sense, why yes or to whom? 8k has been standardized YEARS ago, has been researched since the 90s, has multiple tvs & cameras on the market, WHAT IS WRONG WITH A COMPANY ADDING ONE MORE MODEL TO THEIR LONG LINEUP?

Lol when 4k is not even mainstream yet. & when displays & graphic cards & processors are struggling even in 4k..

Good Luck with 8k but first please release content with 8k
i guess it can be used as some static Wallpaper in an Event or CES or Electronic Expo ever year..

if you're not spending money on manufacturing, why does it matter?

Are you on drugs ?
Being angry like that for a such ridiculous matter is misplaced ...

4k today isn't really used today (capacity of storage, network speed, computation for encoding and decoding like x265 is not yet really hardware supported for encoding). It's mostly a scale-up.
8k can exists, I really don't care, but stop harassing people because you think that having 8k is a life threatening matter for you.

OLED and QLED, are completely different technologies. They are so different is like CRT vs LCD.... ;)

Regarding 8K, not sure about other countries, but Japan already has the infrastructure ready for 8K, since when they deployed 4K TV broadcasting they also made it ready for 8K@120Hz since the initial investment.

maybe 5 if nvidia wants to xD
I would say 30, since they would prefer to milk their customers to the skin with Intel like performance increase levels...
