ASUS Slaps Intel Core i7-8750H Processor in Its Ultra-Thin Zephyrus GX501 Gaming Laptop

Similar to other laptop manufacturers, ASUS will also give their ROG Zephyrus GX501 the special Coffee Lake treatment. The new model (GX501GI EI005T) is powered by an Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor that operates at 2.2 GHz with a turbo boost clock of 4.1 GHz. With 9MB of onboard L3 cache, the Core i7-8750H boasts a 45W TDP. The Zephyrus GX501 comes with 16GB of DDR4-2400 memory and a 512GB SSD. The 15.6-inch display on the Zephyrus GX501 features a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, 144 Hz refresh rate, and support for NVIDIA's G-Sync technology. Unfortunately, the laptop's very slim body forces ASUS to implement the Max-Q variant of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 GPU. Judging from the photographs of the latest Zephyrus GX501, the machine not only received a processor upgrade but also a slight facelift. It appears that ASUS has pushed the keyboard upwards closer to the display. The GX501GI EI005T was listed for 3499 Swiss francs at a Swiss retailer, which translates over to around $3657.

Pfft, forced to support adaptive sync desktop monitors. They are arbitrarily supporting it on mobile and not desktop.

Unfortunately, that'll happen when pigs fly. I could see some sort of false advertising suit working for mobile, though.

Why this model does not have at least a QHD screen is bonkers. This would be an amazing mobile gaming solution with the GPU and CPU. That extra bit of pixels isn't anywhere as taxing as 4K.

I for one think this is more or less worth it's money. Sure it costs a fortune but there isn't really any other laptop this thin with these kinds of specs.

Laptop is a matter of speaking, I doubt this thing can work for 1h away from a power outlet.

Yes I love very thin and portable heaters!
Right?

I really don't understand this "Ultra-thin" laptop trend. Sure it can be done, but why? I'd rather have a beefier laptop that is more sturdy, has room for stuff inside and room for upgrades. Ultra-thin laptops are ok but a bit of a waste..

You're right, The Verge tested one, and said it was a very good performer, but as for it's battery (4 cell, 50 Whrs polymer) -
"Battery life might be the greatest disappointment, with the Zephyrus scoring just over 2 hours on The Verge battery test, which simply cycles webpages at a set display brightness, which is flat out terrible for a laptop. And gaming with this unplugged is more or less an exercise in futility."
I suppose that any thin laptop with great gaming performance would have the same problem. But then nobody should buy one to do a lot of unplugged gaming.

And that raises the question: why buy a gaming laptop at all?
In the age of the cloud saves, you can pick up where you left off even without carrying the whole system with you.

Truly an e-peen machine. So what if it provides an experience compromised to the core? "For the road warrior that needs to game on the road" (more money than sense).

I guess it would be handy if you wanted to game at a friend's house (who has no decent PC), or in different rooms of your own house, or outside on the porch. Still, seems like way too much money for that limited convenience. But many people I know think that a laptop is the only option, especially younger people, and TV addicts who want to sit in the living room, on their laptop (while the "watch" TV). Most women I know are like this (unthinkable to miss anything on the almighty TeeVee), and don't get the point of a desktop PC.
