The original RAGE may not have garnered the best critical or consumer reception - it did have some pacing and mechanics issues that deterred it from being a true genre-defining experience, alongside teetering (read: absent) story and character development. However, the games' setting and world was an interesting one, and it served as a showcase for the iD Tech 5 engine and its MegaTexture technology that made the game look rather impressive for its time.

It looks as if Bethesda has looked back on this IP and decided to give it a new breath of life, though, hopefully building upon the first games' shortcomings. The rumor trail started with a Walmart Canada slip-up, where the company posted a placeholder product in the form of Rage 2. Rather than take it negatively, Bethesda took to the (then unconfirmed) leak and seemingly made it legit, by posting, via Twitter, a humorous message disparaging the errors in the placeholder title: absent capitalization of RAGE, inexistent box art, and the series' recognizable "Anarchy" symbol. Bethesda's Pete Hines has since commented on the development, saying that "This is why we can't have nice things", and Bethesda's official Twitter tweeted a picture of the Big Ben with a smear of the same pink ink they used to correct Walmart Canada's mistakes. All in all, it seems the rumor mill is getting this one right, and that we might be looking at an impending announcement. Here's to a game that delivers exotic technology and engine capabilities once again.

I liked Rage better than Doom 2016. Rage tried to do something different and it was not a bad game at all. Doom 2016 was the same formulaic crap.

Regardless of critics reviews Rage was rather good in my opinion.
The only thing I don't like is that the only mastermind left in iD team is Tim Willits and a few Halo guys, and besides being famous for various "Tim Willits invented [insert your funny invention here]" memes, he's also quite famous for stretching deadlines and announcing stuff wa-a-a-a-y before it's even close to being in a presentable state. Doom 2016 was an exception, because it was in a semi-ready state even before Carmack left.

I like the guy a lot, but sometimes he's just too eager to stir the hype about their upcoming stuff before they've even started working on it.

Rage is probably the only id game I truly like. Beat it twice I think. If memory serves, it kind of ended on a cliff hanger.

I wonder if they'll get John Goodman and Claudia Black back for voice overs.

Bethesda Softworks publishes pretty much all games under the Zenimax Media brand including id Software titles (e.g. Doom). id is likely developing it.

id sold out to them only one hanging on are the id guys that could not make it elsewhere . your first clue is ditrect x id games never used it there opengl and had Linux clients as well and full retail game disks [no steam type client required ]

If you look at the recent history of video games then you will notice one stand out fact. While many game engines and games have embraced Microsoft’s DirectX for PC games, id Software and John Carmack have stuck with OpenGL.

The reasons for this were explained by Carmack as far back as 1996 in one of his famous .plan updates. While Carmack saw DirectX, and in particular Direct 3D as having an edge in some respects, he dismissed it as as “horribly broken” API but admitted that it would “suck-less” with every new version.''

Microsoft shouldn’t start celebrating yet, though. Even though Carmack prefers DirectX he won’t be using it any time soon. Although he could easily port the final game executables of id titles over to the API, the engine and its tools are all using OpenGL and that’s not a code base Carmack wants to sit down and change over to DirectX just for the sake of it.

its all about you being fooled and there just playing off id's good name and titles to sell you there games .

its not ID its just the use of there name and wht ever they bought off them to use

that's just how I see it right or worng these bethesta games are a total no sale here anyway / no full game retail disk , mandatory steam type clients or internet connection required , mandatory content to down load = no sale . I don't need to game that bad .

its all about getting there clients on your hard drive as fast as they can ... , but to each his own on all that and there opinion . what you think for yourself is all that matters for you.

The ending was rubbish , they should have kept all the game in those wasteland/sewers/ruins settings.

Gotta agree. Enjoyed 95% of the game, thought its bad reputation undeserved. The ending though...not fun and out of character.

id Tech engine is still OpenGL/Vulkan based. Rage 2 will likely be built off of id Tech engine. Zenimax uses games like Rage to promote and sell id Tech engine to other developers. id Tech is still by far the best game engine for OpenGL development.

Same here. I only played doom at all, b/c people swore it was good, but it was the same boring garbage as doom III.

Man, I'd love to be able to go back to the 90s and play unreal 1 SP for the first time, again. RIP real gaming.

Rage , a very underrated game.
The big reason it doesn't get the props it deserves is that despite iD telling Nvidia and ATi a year in advance that they were bringing out a bleeding edge game that would use the latest OpenGL features so they needed to get their drivers ready, the driver support at launch was beyond shocking. That gave the game a reputation as being badly made/buggy which it never shook off.

It’s true and even later drivers broke it pretty bad. At one point all I could get when I launched it was a little green square in the top left of my screen, it was that way for more than a few drivers and that well after release. But when it worked it was definitely a fun game.

Same here on NVidia. What's even scarier, is that I beat it on my laptop w/ GT630, but that was a couple of years after its release.

Wow, I wasn't expecting to see so much hate on Doom. I really enjoyed it. Maybe it is because I wasn't looking for something completely different. I wanted more of the same of what I enjoyed in Doom 3. It might have been because I played (beat) it on the difficulty level just below Nightmare or the hardest one. It was fun and challenging.

I havent gotten around to playing Rage yet, but I will now.
