AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) announced the appointment of software chief architect, Dr. Jeffrey Cheng, to AMD corporate fellow. The appointment is based on his demonstrated technical leadership and role evolving the company's graphics technologies and approach to software development. Dr. Cheng has played a key architect role spanning hardware, software and system component design at AMD and has a deep understanding of operating systems, applications and end user requirements. Dr. Cheng has been at the helm of major AMD products and technologies that significantly impacted the industry, including GPU architectural design for Microsoft Windows , GPU virtualization with SR-IOV technology (single-root input/output virtualization), the AMD Radeon "Vega" High-Bandwidth Cache Controller, and GPU datacenter projects.

"Jeffrey has been an integral part of the team for many years and is one of the most respected leaders in graphics system engineering and software architecture," said David Wang, senior vice president, engineering, Radeon Technologies Group. "He is a creative, independent thinker whose technical mind and ability to coach and mentor other staff members has led AMD to develop great graphics products over the years. In his new role, Jeffrey will continue helping evolve our software strategy as we introduce our future high-performance products to create more immersive experiences and use the power of the GPU to solve some of our industry's most pressing computing challenges."

With AMD for almost 20 years, Dr. Cheng is a respected technology leader in graphics system engineering, graphics software architecture, GPU virtualization and cloud computing, GPU memory management and scheduling subsystem, heterogeneous computing and shared virtual memory systems. He is known for motivating and driving technical teams to explore new technologies and create new solutions, and pushing teams to analyze and problem solve complex critical system interaction issues.

Promotion to AMD Fellow is an honor bestowed to the most accomplished innovators. AMD Corporate Fellows are appointed after a rigorous review process that assesses not only specific technical contributions to the company, but involvement in the industry at large, mentoring of others and improving the long-term strategic position of the company.

Congratulations, Dr. Cheng. You put your time and hard work in with AMD for almost 20 years, and you deserve recognition. If you're in on the vast improvements in AMD graphics drivers in the past few years, you deserve a standing ovation. Good for you! Stay positive, and AMD can only get better.

you know its is sometimes the guy that moves threw the ranks in a company that sees the problems and is more capable of fixing those problems. i do hope he has well earned the position and was in part responsible for amd making a comeback because he is now in a position were he can truly shine.

As far as I can tell this is AMD bestowing honors in a desperate attempt to prevent more people from jumping ship. Their graphics division is rapidly brain draining right now.

No you're in virtually every topic with a half-assed, badly written piece of junk that half the time isn't even true. Said it before, its painful to read, sticks out like a sore thumb.

Not so odd, when you consider that most are saying negative things or making jokes, like yourself. The OP was helping AMD and the TPU community recognize a loyal, valuable asset who has undoubtedly improved gaming in many ways. A little respect is in order. Would you want your 15 minutes of fame reduced to somebody's lame joke or meme?

Raja and their advertisement guy went to intel. Good riddance. Raja is not the CEO type the guy clearly had a tough time running RTG. Overy hype all the time and under delivering. Their advertisement was horrible too. It was probably more like they were out the door anyways after Lisa took over. Lisa will probably straighten things out. I believe they also hired some good talent after lisa took over.

There are moments when you just gotta call like you see them, but you are right, no I wouldnt be reduced to a meme. However, there is no hiding the trend that AMD employees are being recruited by Intel, it only a matter of time when it will happen. So, I will just just repeat my original reply: So when is he moving to Intel?

In all fairness I think the opposite is true here, he will not be moving, because there has obviously been some sweet talking going on, you don't appoint a 'Corporate Fellow' who is planning to leave. It would be damaging to AMD and completely counters the idea of a professional relationship.

In all honesty, this is a good thing. They have been, for some time, picking up all ex-ATi-Mobile engineers of the day, too.
Intel may have a big marketing influence, but they have had horrendous third party driver support - for the Atom series. There should be continuity in the full roster of a brand from top to bottom of the pack. AMD had at least kept its word and continues to do so even to this day, just check out how the Raven Ridge APU platform is being merged with the successive driver updates of mainstream discrete desktop gpus.
