"History turned to legend, legend turned to myth", is part of one of the opening lines on the first Lord of the Rings movie. And it just so happens it applies pretty well to the overall rumor mill context and expectation: we'll see if this is history in the making or not. Case in point: leaked benchmarks point towards NVIDIA's next-gen 1100 series of graphics cards to bring tangible performance improvements, with the 1170 tier delivering GTX 1080 Ti levels of performance. This is conveyed through a 3D Mark Firestrike score of 22,989 - of which true authenticity can't be ascertained, due to the old "photo of a screenshot" trick. The 2.5 GHz core clock also seems too good to be true - and the 16 GB memory pool tends towards that end of the spectrum as well. Still, it wets the appetite, doesn't it? Just another rumor that we'll eventually see either confirmed or dismissed - like the expected launch date.

so the entry level next gen card is better than the high end last gen card. Where have we seen this treadmill before?

Last point is price. Specs aren't that unbelievable. Maxwell went to 1.4 GHz with up to 2 GHz on Pascal, compare it to 1 GHz Kepler and 700 MHz Fermi. With current generation they need to "kill" 9 and 10 series all at once due to second hand market due to mining. And also 6 series still exists as "cheap" solution thanks to mining and YT (7 mostly rare, 750 priced too high for performance, but still very popular, 760/70 sidegrade to 680/70/60, 780 was beaten by 9 series too fast).

Doesn't 16GB seem like an unnecessary expense over 8GB given the cost and usefulness?

This is 7nm level clocks. And shows 2,5gbps for 20gbps gddr effective. That is maybe 2 years away. Expect 2048-6144 cuda for the series and 1160 to best 1080. 7nm is coming too. Very soon after or this is it.

Also, GTX 1070 at GTX 980 Ti level, GTX 970 at GTX 780 Ti level.

True for the former but wrong for the latter. The 970 was near the 780 vanilla and the 780ti was faster than even the 980 on most workloads at the time of the maxwell launch.

980ti oc could reach 1080, so def not true. 780 is 14% slower than 970 nowhere near, and 970 could also oc to 980 level, thus 30% above the 780. Later due to lack of proper driver optimisations the 780 performance was hit hard delivering 78% of 970. No doubt about it.

Most possible a heavily oced 1080 is the GPU that got this score. Clocks reveal much imho.

But there are things like photoshop and like wise software. My point is this can be faked.

I will wait and see what nvidia eventually comes out with official. Until then i take every news like this with a gran of salt.

Here we go again, with the faulty old one card overclocked and the other not comparisons. In addition to the fact that overclocking wasn't even being discussed in the first place.

980ti oc could reach 1080, so def not true.

I'm comparing to launch dates and both of them com OC so that argument amounts to nothing. I had a 980ti and even making huge OCs I couldn't get near a 1070 with a good OC.

780 is 14% slower than 970 nowhere near

I was talking at launch! They were very very close. I know it to be a fact since I owned them both :p

and 970 could also oc to 980 level, thus 30% above the 780.

Again the OC non-sense. I always push OC to the limits which makes these kind of points invalid.

Later due to lack of proper driver optimisations the 780 performance was hit hard delivering 78% of 970. No doubt about it.

Again, I was talking about performances at launch. This drivers issues only started to be apparent in very few titles after 6 months or so after launch.

Context:
I had a GTX780 with a aftermarket air cooler (artic accelero iv) and when the drivers started to lag (or maybe it was the architecture of the GPU that started to be the issue) I switched to a temporary GTX970 from MSI since I knew the 980ti was not that far off and in the mean time I had better performance in games like the witcher 3 and GTAV.

Then I switched to the GTX980ti from gigabyte and friends of mine with similar systems with a GTX1070 always had around 15% more performance in most titles. Since I still could play pretty much everything maxed out I had no issues. Eventually I graduated to my current GTX1080ti from MSI and I see no reason to need more performance for 1440p for now and thus I'm thinking of skipping the next generation.

well i really wish GTX 1160 to be great, 1170 to be awesome and dunno what to wait about 1180 and 1180ti... but i really doubt GTX 1160-70 having more than 8GB and GTX 1180ti havin 12 GB memory,
i do really hope GTX 1160 having a 256 bit memory bus, and possible 2x6 pin connector, possible match for GTX 1070 or ti, on the mid range cards,

Who cares what they could overclock to? Pointless exercise, considering all the higher cards could also overclock.

True for the former but wrong for the latter.
Actually he's right on both counts, in fact when retailers were selling off the 780s cheap after the 900 series launch they actually made a point of advertising that the factory overclocked 780ti cards could trade blows with the GTX970.

better forget that 256 Bit now, for a 128 bit is much more likely

16GB? - FAKE it would make this card +100$ more expensive (vs 8GB one), just for that memory alone. even if nvidia wanted to sell gtx 1170 for 700$ - a 100$ difference is huge even for that price point

What are you smoking. 980ti OC = 1080?? No. Its = 1070. The 1080 is 25-30% faster. Even the fastest, watercooled and suped up 980ti at 1650mhz won't hit a 1080's performance.

The 780 is equal to a 970 always has been, perhaps more recently it will lose out more because it runs into 3 GB VRAM and bandwidth limits.
780ti was 'about' equal to a 980 but the same 3GB VRAM limit applies here too.
There was never a 30% gap between the 970 and 980, which is why everyone jumped on a 970.

'Lack of driver optimizations' is another such copypasted rumor that was debunked over and over again.
Get your facts straight and stop spreading nonsense.

I don't know why people remember the 780 to be much faster than it really was. A 970 was faster than it and the 980 was all around a bit faster than a 780ti even TPU's database shows that.

Call it a rumor all you want but the gap between Kepler and Maxwell did nothing but widen over the years , 970s are now a touch faster than 780tis. The myth was that Nvidia is gimping performance through drivers on older GPUs which isn't true but they are certainly not paying as much attention to these older GPUs neither.

All of these are still rumor mills, guys. Wccftech (I think that's their name) said this leak is still not the final product & may be likely an edited screenshot. But, considering Nvidia unveiling the upcoming chip around August, I say we just keep these rumors to ourselves for now. In another note, if this GTX1170 is ~30% faster than the GTX1080Ti, as per what the leak says, then it's gonna be a decent bang for the buck.
