I've got a small fan like that on my X79 Motherboard, and it's almost silent.

That small fan is one of the only things keeping the VRM from self immolating, so I'd like to keep it on there thank you very much.

It's needed, esp when you OC and bench the thing 24/7. VRM's output heat due to voltage conversion, and the huge amps flowing through it. It needs proper cooling.

It'd be nice if they would add ACPI support for XP on this one as they didn't on the Dark and that really limited its usefulness for 2D memory benchmarks.

I hate to be petty, but I wish they changed their name.

But they would have been my second choice after SM...especially for something like this (I don't think SM even makes microatx x299).

Is that small fan really needed? A good designed board should have 0 need for that thing to help to cool vrms.
Also, if its inaudible then it is doing almost nothing, if its doing something then it is going to be loud, regardless a useless thing imho

The difference between purely passive cooling and even the most worthless, weaksauciest fans is HUGE. I'm fairly sure that just that tiny fan on the bare VRM would be more effective than just that heatsink being cooled via convective airflow.

Yes, it'll keep your VRM temps down quite a bit and allow more head room for overclocking. See the heatsink that is on the EVGA X299 Dark; one of the most highly rated X299 boards out there.

Yup. While the fans on the X299 Dark proved that they weren't necessarily needed, they did bring temps down quite a bit on the board. Check out Steve's (Tech Jesus) review of the board over at GamersNexus.net
