When NVIDIA teased its August 20 event with the #BeForTheGame video earlier this week, we didn't pay as close attention to the chat the gamers were having in it, as some redditors. A screengrab confirms two things: One, that NVIDIA will launch its next-generation graphics card on August 20; and two, that the card will be named GeForce GTX 2080. This settles the debate on whether NVIDIA uses the GeForce 11-series progression or GeForce 20-series. The 10-series (eg: GTX 1080, 1070, etc.) felt like a natural continuation of 900-series (GTX 980, 970); while 20-series (eg: 2080, 2070), similarly feels like a natural succession of 10-series.

Update: Some users are also paying attention to another screengrab with a username RoyTeX, hinting at the possibility of NVIDIA disposing of the "GTX" moniker for "RTX," as it did with its recent Quadro RTX series. If true, the nomenclature could look something like GeForce RTX 2080, RTX 2070, etc. Apparently NVIDIA is going big with its real-time ray-tracing tech.

Heh, only someone who doesn't understand the naming schemes at all would think new series are going to be named GTX 1180...

So its GTX instead of RTX? People assume its RTX 2080 because at the 40 and 45 second mark we see a chat with someone named RoyTeX
And regarding not being GTX 11: there's literally someone in the discord chat named not_11
At the end of the video when the date goes up, first go 20, and then 80.

Boy,I hope they don't launch stupid 800 euro cards this time, with stupid drivers and stupid software. Some people might be salty after they buy them.Although if you know what you buy is stupid but you do anyway, you know what that means...

RTX is only used for cards capable of raytracing, basically the Quadro cards they already introduced. GeForce ones will still be called GTX. Not sure of their raytracing capabilities, but we can't expect any of it for gaming at the moment anyway...

Why not? NVIDIA has a great chance for a fresh branding. It is not confirmed to be GTX yet. Could be either

It be interesting tho. Devoting a big chunk of Die to something that might just not be well adopted unless they GameWorks RTX every game down the road.

I could care less what it is called - architecture named: "TorinerozLigmaBalzz" and model name: "XYZ 2180b" would be fine with me... I only care about one thing performance/price and how it stacks up vs existing Pascal and especially gtx 1080ti - because, if this 2080 would be as powerful as gtx 1080 ti (+/-5%), but will cost 700$+ it will be a big loss for all of us and will basically give us nothing for an extra cost (a set back from our existing gen and price situation), but of course nvidia will "offer" us the RatyTrace and the "major leap" over Pascal (aka - that is why we should shed extra money for no performance gains and be happy) - but in real world it wont give us absolutely nothing in next few years (aka this gpu generation life cycle) and that price 700$+ could stay that way for a long time - because there is no coempetition at this point (or near future)...

They don't need to refresh the lineup, they have already done that by naming it GTX 1080 after GTX 980. They now basically have 9 generations available under this naming scheme unless they made something radical worthy of an entirely new naming scheme.

naming it RTX series would be a bit bold, considering it would be carrying the raytracing capability, are they implying that an RTX 1050 can raytrace and be playable?

I Dont know, but maybe you should read news on videocardz, as this news is 2 days old now there.

A full list of hints:
  • RoyTeX = RTX
  • Not_11 = clearly not 11
  • Mac-20 = 20 Series
  • Eight-Tee = 80
  • AlanaT = Alan Turing
  • Zenith20 = 20 series
  • Ray = RTX
  • give me 20
  • GPS coordinates: “50.968495,7.014026” describe launch location
  • Rolling date numbers appear in the order of 2,0,8,0

The war is over, they haven't even topped Pascal yet. But you are right, even now new straws are being clung to.

As far as I know Pascal does have a hardware scheduler for it (or at least a portion). Maxwell 2 didn't for sure.

Still inferior to what GCN has, regardless few even have a clue what asynchronous compute is really for so it's a moot point talking about it anyway .

Why wasting so much time to guess if it is an R or a G, 20 or 11... whatever will be, will be.
Give it a rest, when is out, you'll know.

I think it was about async shaders not async compute

I'm not aware of anything other than some sort of pre-emption done in software.
