Intel has a new Extreme series chip, this time intended for notebooks. The X7800 runs at a clock speed of 2.6 GHz, with an 800 MHz FSB. The chip's multiplier is unlocked, and it can therefore be overclocked - Matbe achieved 3 GHz.

The ASUS G2S notebook, which was used by Matbe to test the new CPU, was configured as follows:
  • Intel X7800
  • Motherboard with Intel's 965PM chipset
  • 2GB DDR2 667MHz memory
  • GeForce Go 8600M GT 256MB GDDR3
  • 200GB Toshiba 4,200rpm SATA HDD

Nope, I believe they're S479. Or at least the Pentium Ms were.
Nice spec n that testing laptop, apart from the HDD... yeah, you have 200GB, but 4200RPM? Pfft... it'd take twice as long for HL2 to load... and three times as long for STALKER to preload objects...
Still, I wonder how a laptop would handle the heat generated by that chip, espec. when overclocking, multiplier or FSB. I think it's be better on a S479 desktop motherboard, as a fast mATX gaming system.

Is the 8800 mobile even around? I heard rumours, and I also heard that Nvidia canned it due to the 8800 being so power hungry and running so damned hot.
I guess if that's the case, the 8600 or 8700 cards dont seem like such a bad compromise to me.
Could be worse, could be running an X1600 mobile, heheh. (Oh noes! The MBP crowd attacks!)

the 8600gs is the best mobile card available right now, if the ruined anything on its the hard drive. need at least the 7200rpm. shoot id want mine to be loud with that 7200rpm so i can show off in class and make more noise then my professors lol

and i wouldnt o/c it cause you lose battery life and thats actually important when you talk about notebooks. but damn 2.6ghz dual core laptop would be amazing

I guess Intel SpeedStep is well implemented to stop it running 2.6 100% of the time... I think the 1.6GHz Core Duo goes down to something low, like 800MHz when it's not loaded, and it really cuts down heat and improves battery life above 2.5Hrs.
I know someone with a Core Duo, the laptop has a 945GM chipset IIRC. It has an upgrade path to a Core 2 Duo, so I'd guess this is a possibility for you, but it might need to be used on the new 965 chipset.
Frankly, it costs too much to be completely worth it. Desktop CPUs are much cheaper, and, unless you use a laptop as a primary PC, then a lower end 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo should be enough for most.
This is just basically for true desktop replacement laptops, and gaming laptops, maybe for people that need a mobile workstation. If coupled with a mobile Quadro of FireGL.
