I was in Uppsala a couple of months ago and it looked just like when I went to school there, well, apart from all the new apartments that were being built on the north side of the city centre. I didn't see any syringes either, only a couple of beggars. Gottsunda is the trouble spot and it hasn't changed for over 20 years. Rinkeby has had issues since the 1960's, so nothing new there. But again, these are small, isolated areas, not the country as a whole as you seem to want to make it out to be, along with the media. Hell, I saw much more syringes and needles when I lived in London. I had neighbours dealing drugs there and I didn't even live close to the "bad" areas there.

I think you need to travel more if you think I was referring to WWII type ghettos. You only need to go to some of the poorer Asian countries to see massive ghettos. Hey, I was just in India, there we can talk about ghettos, in fact, some people are so damn bad off they sleep under a motorway bridge, as at least that way, they stay dry when it rains.

I see no reason why that would be strange at all. Women are a minority in this field, just how they are a majority in others. I am sure no one has ever thought women are strangely absent from the frontlines or from cleaning the sewers or working in coal mines. But I am sure you've seen that being brought up many times. I see nothing wrong with wishing that a particular group would be better represented in a field if that's achieved through merit. When you start setting arbitrary rules and motives just for the sake of seeing that group grow, well, that's when things go terribly wrong. And this whole thing reeks of that.

I don't want arbritrary rules. I'd just like to see more women be interested (and thus, seek careers). I'm putting the burden on more of them to join, if anything. Not on anyone else to force it.

Wow, that sounds exactly like what I'd want to reply to your paragraph above that. What, exactly, have I made up? What problems of mine have I mentioned here? Have I claimed to be a victim of discrimination?

That (gender, sexual orientation, racial, and other) discrimination and bias in the tech industry exists is an indisputable fact. Other than that, I can't think of any factual claims I've made. As I'm not a woman and don't work (or want to work) in tech, I don't quite see why any of the rest applies to me. I'm hinting more towards civil war kind of a thing not WWIII, the fabric of our society depends on the basic principle of understanding ~ which is breaking down as we speak. The purge IMO would be the biggest change & possibly the most painful change ever, it doesn't have to be bloody but the powers that be will probably not relinquish their authority easily.

I entirely agree with the second paragraph there, though I don't believe in any kind of violent attempt at resolving inequality, as violent "solutions" always lead to the creation of new hierarchies to replace the old ones. The Russian revolution and the rapid decline of the Soviet Union from barely-attempted Socialism to outright fascism is a classic example of this. There are plenty of legal channels to enact this change, even if it will be slow.

As for the first, the main issue isn't that understanding is breaking down, but that for the first time in history it's easy for marginalized groups to express themselves while we've also built up a system of research and knowledge-gathering institutions who analyze our society freely rather than by the wishes or commands of those in power. From this, we suddenly have a multitude of conflicting interpretations of society and reality, and a privileged group that has thus far been the default to power (in the West: white men) who suddenly have their entire worldview fundamentally challenged by a host of opponents. When a lot of these people don't have nice, cushy lives (thanks, capitalism!) and thus don't see themselves as privileged (even though they are, just not in all ways, and it's of course possible to be both privileged and not at the same time in different fields), the "easiest" reaction is conflict and denial rather than understanding and dialogue. If everyone took a step back and attempted to listen to the experiences of others, this could be a relatively smooth transition. The problem is that some groups see the removal of privilege as an attack on them, when it's actually a leveling of the playing field.
