Editorial Linux Community Hit by the Blight of Social Justice Warfare, A Great Purge is Coming

Well, you can entertain conspiracy theories like me. That's kind of entertaining? :p

Who has the most to gain from this? Which unlikely entity is somehow a top contributor of Linux code? Why are on they on the Linux Foundation? Who owns GitHub, where this CoC first flourished?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish

Microsoft once called Linux a "cancer". I think they might purposely be turning it into a cancer.. and fulfilling their own description.

Nah, there's nothing entertaining about any of this. I doubt Microsoft can bring down Linux though, even if they are somehow throwing SJW people at them. What if Linus and (insert other people here) being targeted never stepped down, and basically ignored all this? I think the people that don't care what Linus/etc says/have said and just want to use some form of Linux far outweigh those who would swear off Linux because he didn't bend over for the SJW people, or because they found out he called somebody a retard or something.

Linus got a pass because people who knew him also knew he didn't understand people in general. In interviews he talked about growing up and using his sister to translate the world for him... not sure if he falls on the autistic scale or sociopath scale... but the man truly doesn't get emotions...

Hard to find the earlier interviews... anything searched with linus torvalds and emotion gets the 2018 story.
Heck, even his wording this time shows you...
Linus apologized for his behavior, calling the personal attacks of the past "unprofessional and uncalled for" and announced a period of "time off" to "get some assistance on how to understand people’s emotions and respond appropriately".

He doesn't get people, and doesn't understand why they can't just handle a verbal beating. That's why he accepted the CoC... people he trusted told him to... doesn't mean he agrees or understands it.

Wrong quote, Ferrum Master. Leave me out of this.

Wow, didn't take long to get to "great purge" status I see... holy balls.

...

I leave now.

Sorry mate.

More conspiracy: Even his apology is weird. Parts of it have a mixture of unicode and ascii.. like it was edited by someone/somewhere else.

Sadly/disturbingly it's right there in the thread title, even. Not all that shocking given the tone of the initial editorial, but still...

It's all very simple and actually, I'm seeing statements from people I often completely disagree with making sense. Talent and skill should be the key, not anything else.

But that's the rub. I work with the public (unfortunately) and I'm still surprised when a perfectly nice guy suddenly brings out some racist or homophobic mantra. Catches me off guard.

That's the problem. When people with prejudice (often the older generation) are in that position of power, those that they do not tolerate, are discriminated against.

So that's where the SJW comes in. But the agenda is misinterpreted, or hijacked by left or right. The common sense ideology of 'just be cool' is applied as 'be more cool to this group'. Which is shit.

We all get caught up in the politics, we all have beliefs, of sorts. But underlying every good persons values is that we treat people right. If you can't treat someone right, you are, without doubt, part of the problem. And that means, if a lefty can't appreciate a conservative viewpoint, that's just as bad as the reverse. We'll never love everyone but the least we can try to do is get along.

Except for the lizard people. Fuck the lizard people.

I don't know if it's that it's been hijacked, but I think sometimes people get so "woke" that they become hyper-aware..

I know this, because I've experienced it in myself. When I was younger, I got so sensitive that I would lash out at friends who I had known for years for the slightest things. Like one time a (white) couple asked me what they should order when we went to a Chinese restaurant. I got pissed off. "How the hell should I know? I'm not Chinese. Do you assume all Asian people eat the same food?"

But I stopped myself and realized how stupid it was. I was hurting them just as much for being so cynical.

Now years later I'm seeing a younger culture adopt this attitude on a larger scale. "Microaggressions" and whatnot. They see ill intent in the most trivial actions. It's good to call out overt racism, but this stuff needs to stop.

I agree with 90% of what you said there, but have to raise one objection: saying "be more cool to this group" is often a necessity in bringing equilibrium into a system that starts out skewed. Nobody is saying that any and all disadvantaged groups should by default be given preferential treatment, but expecting a biased system to correct itself by asking its stakeholders to "be cool" is a bit naive. Those in power do some times need to be treated "unfairly" to a certain extent to ensure the equalization of power. As long as this happens in controlled and transparent forms, there is nothing wrong with it. Not to mention that saying "be more cool to this group" often is a fundamental requirement of having their plight acknowledged at all.

Yeah, missed that. Maybe I had my shields up too strong some would say, but fuck if I come here to get stressed out.

Or multiple text editors were used because you know, Linux is a mess of many parts...

Maybe because he is Finnish, I use two layouts too. I can write English in mine, but not vice versa. So often it switches around.

Except for the lizard people. Fuck the lizard people.

My lizzard friends will remember this.

Otherwise, my views right down to the nitty gritty. Good on you, for thinking like froggy. You will be spared when we need more spawning pools (unless the lizard people get too many votes on the governing council, in which case, fuck man, bite your tongue)

No, you! Not entertaining at all. ;)

You have a point, but remember that terms like "microaggressions" have meaning to most people who use them. You might term it oversensitivity, but there is something to be said about the stress and emotional impact of being near-constantly pelted with prejudiced preconceptions and expectations, in particular if you're living in a society that generally values you less than the average person. While the person saying the thing might not mean anything by it, there's no harm in listening to people when they say it bothers them. If someone can't express themselves without racial/gendered/sexualized stereotypes - even tiny ones - when communicating with other people, the blame is on the speaker, not the person reacting.

No, you! Not entertaining at all. ;)
We all know it's the Illuminati. You're probably working for them, what with how you keep calling this a conspiracy - reverse psychology at its most obvious! Hah!

He also knows everything about you if you have a facebook.

Don't worry, the real lizard men are working to fix this... by removing you.

More (serious) conspiracy.. one of the sign offs on the Linux CoC was Facebook. Why the hell should they even get a say?

Even more conspiracy. Darpa program Lifelog was closed the same day Facebook was established. Obvious government spying program is obvious.

Because they are a huge user of the Linux kernel on their servers. I think they are second only to google in kernel deployment.

I'm not too concerned, even as a privacy advocate. They generally won't have you being viewed by anything other than a computer (ie no human will care to look at your data) unless you get yourself flagged by typing something like KILL DONALD DUCK into a forum and change a few letters, in which case further analysis of your public postings IS probably warranted.

You know, people get all mad at Obama for starting a lot of the surveilance stuff, but:

a.) Some of it (maybe even most of it?) was started under Bush.

b.) If I was in office as the first black president in an era where I'm being accused of being a non-native socialist and nazi-agent (often at the same time), I'd be worried too.

Therein lies the problem. All kinds of people were concerned when it was "LifeLog" and run by an obviously untrustworthy entity.

Give it a pretty name though, put it in [seemingly] private space, and people willingly volunteer their lives.

Not everyone.

And no, I wasn't concerned about LifeLog either in general concept. Truth be told government surveilance of actually dangerous individuals is neccesary to some degree. It's all about how it's controlled and used. In my view all of our web data should be catalogged but it should take a major machine flagging system coupled with a human reviewer to get the court order neccesary for the general investigators to use that data in court. And it should only be usable on violent, federal crimes, forget parking violations and whatnot.

Remember, I am a proactive privacy advocate who takes major offense to the Intel Management Engine to the point of producing scrubbed firmware with it removed. So I can talk here. ;)

I know people view it as nutty in this day and age, but I actually do believe the government is basically good, with some severely misguided individuals tainting the processs. That's where rules need to be set to limit the damage they can do.

They see ill intent in the most trivial actions.
It doesn't help that a lot of younger people see themselves as being shit on by the previous generation. College tuition is the highest it's ever been in the US. The difference in wages from the people on the top to the people on the bottom have never been wider. Chances of retirement is basically slim and none, and slim just left town. Social Security is going to be gone by the time most young people need it since Congress is using it as their personal slush fund and haven't put anything back. So yeah... you can see how this generation is so angry, they've realized that they are well and truly fucked.

All i have to say is, that even if i get payed four or five times less than any of you, doing the same job, at least i don't have to deal with HR or watch what i say to my colleagues like the fucking STASI is spying us.

, they've realized that they are well and truly fucked.
How about our generations in former communist country's ??? You people are complaining, have you ever stood in queues like our parents did to buy rations of bread, milk or meat ? are the shelves empty in your stores ? did the electrical power go down at random so that the State would save money ? was the gasoline/petrol rationed to 40 liters a month ? did you get snitched on by your neighbors for saying your mind ?
FFS how can you people slowly turn to what we were 30 years ago ?

I think this says a lot about human stupidity. so, it's better to be inclusive than giving the job to someone that is the best at it. the cancer is real. :)

Things like this already broke whatever "rules" that were meant to check it. There is no longer a "limit" when the very implementation of a system crossed the red line. You only ever had one defense: The Constitution. When even that no longer provides a proper check to power, then nothing will. What are you going to do? Advocate for new rules.. that the Constitution already gave.. and they didn't care about in the first place?
