CD Projekt Red has revealed the gameplay trailer for Thronebreaker, a new role-playing game set in the Witcher universe. Thronebreaker, however, isn't a new third-person role-playing game, like the The Witcher games before it. Thronebreaker was at first being developed as a single-player campaign companion to Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. But of course, as with all CD Projekt Red projects, their ambition and drive drove the package to be much more than just that, meriting its own separate release. However, some ties remain to Gwent, in the form of card unlocks and Gwent elements being integrated into Thronebreakers' gameplay.
Thronebreaker was developed by leading developers behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and will feature some 30 hours of story content to be consumed. This content is made up of a main storyline, which goes hand in hand with empress Meve's plight against an impending Nilfgaardian invasion (and features 20 distinct world state possibilities for the ending). Some 75 sidequests (crafted with the care of any CD Projekt Red game) will help those 30 hours along, as will some core card game elements in the form of Gwent. Thronebreaker has been announced to release by October 23rd, and will be distributed in the PC platform exclusively via GOG.
P.S.: The tagline "The Witcher Tales" likely points towards additional titles based around (or maybe not) this type of gameplay design and storytelling chops, which sounds great for any and all players that want to dive deeper into the dark, gritty world of The Witcher. I for one am curious to see what other Witcher Tales CD Projekt Red cooks up for us until and after we get our grubby palms on Cyberpunk 2077.
