An OS on it's own isn't going to solve problems. What puts Windows over the top is the ecosystem (if you will). Until someone defeats that, then it's here to stay.

Android and iOS anyone? Not I prefer them but together they are stumping Windows into the ground in raw number of users.

Dude... these are phone and/or tablet OSes right now. At least compare the actual Mac OS or full fledged Linux. They do everything, like Windows.. except Windows does more. Denying it won't change anything. Just actually changing it will.

No, I mean thousands (if not tens of thousands) of games and a myriad of apps to create content. Not just consume it.

Mobile or not, fully functioning or not, they are OS platforms that are more widely used than all "desktop" OS's combined. Like it or not, lot's of people only have one computing device, a phone.

Microsoft has no presence in that market which is the dominant computing platform on the planet. People don't automatically think they need a PC or Mac anymore. Most people can very happily live life with just a phone. That is the reality of the world we live in.

And in a world where that is taking place, Microsoft raises the price of an OS that isn't very popular? If Microsoft doesn't change for the better, it is going to continue it's march into obscurity..

It'd be different if we were talking about Windows 10 in the form of Windows Phone. Microsoft already lost that battle. But this is Windows 10 on desktops.. which goes out of it's way to market itself to "Creators", and slowly, refocusing on desktop gaming. They're not the same thing, simply because they're all "OSes".

Not even Linux in general can claim to be part of Android's ecosystem. Most of it doesn't run on the other. And/or Android even relies on BSD for it's userland, funnily. So it's not even truly a "GNU" system.


edit: I should point out that that new Elder Scrolls games is the first time I've wanted a "phone exclusive" though. But that could be that I'm a TES fanboy. Unfortunately, my Galaxy 7 doesn't meet the requirements.

Sure, as a consumption OS it's days are gone. No one is going to sit around (or has to sit around) hovering around a monitor to watch a "Real Video" of chimps dancing, circa 1999. But in a way, this just brings computers back full circle. They were never billed as consumption machines in the 80s either. It was all work or at least active playing (rather than passive). This is not going to change. And Windows still wins on this front. I'm waiting for others to compete again here.. It's not that I don't want them to. It's just that they simply don't. The Macs could again, but Apple has seemed to stopped caring about Mac OS. Linux just thinks it's won before even getting started. It's annoying. Everything is done in a half assed manner, and then some neckbeard derides people when they say it isn't good enough.

im glad back when Microsoft was doing a day 1 upgrade deal to upgrade from windows 7 to windows 8 for I think it was £24 back then
so I bought 2 digital upgrade windows 8 licences for £48
then it was free upgrade to 8.1
then it was free upgrade to windows 10
so im more than happy I dumped windows 7 for windows 8 cheap offer upgrade, as it's led to free upgrade path all the way to windows 10 on two PC's
and for only £48
glad I wasn't one of the anti windows 8 and at least gave it a chance which has paid of in the long run
love windows 10 best O/S in a long time

funny all those who lost data from not backing up are probs taking class action which Microsoft has off set any cost by upping the price of their software

thus new buyers of windows 10 pay for the mistake of others not backing up class LOL

Also, it’s an issue because MS has not been able to get their semiannual OS replacement right since W10 had the first one. That is inexcusable.

I don't know why MS bothers even selling Windows anymore. The OS isn't exactly the same type of product it once was. They'd win a lot more people over if it was free. edit: Hell, making parts of it open source would be cool too.

While I agree, I'd rather pay for it and maintain the right to claim ownership of the copy I've paid for rather than have it free and have fewer rights of control.

They'd win a lot more people over if it was free.

They did give it away, didn't work so well.

Hell, making parts of it open source itself would be cool too.

Or at least open for inspection so when they claim something it can be independently verified.

everything seems to be suffering high price increases.. hardware software you name it.. being as the potential buyers havnt suddenly got richer it makes me wonder exactly what is going on..

making more money aint quite as simple as jacking up your prices.. maybe they think it is..

blame the companies for HQing in the most anti-biz state of the nation. California is hella expensive and prohibitive, yet tons of dumb companies locate there and pass the overhead to us consumers.

ohhh they can have lavish offices in hip areas of SF or LA and spend more on BS and then skimp and hire slave labor to make the apps or hardware or what not...

It's called buying on credit, lessons haven't been learned. Wait for the next Lehman Moment, it'll be epic.

Credit needs abolished entirely. That's it. All it does is keep prices high instead of people living within their means. I have only used credit 2 x in my life and I paid off the cards within 2 months and then cut them and closed accounts. Never want to use credit again. I only used it briefly, as my paycheck was delayed a bit due to issues with the company's payroll. rather save money for emergencies than rely on credit to screw me over.
