Dell Announces U4919DW Dual Quad HD Monitor: 49", 5120 x 1440, 60 Hz, 3800R, USB-C

Dell today announced the monster of ultrawide monitors, and the world's first Dual Quad HD monitor, in the form of the U4919DW. This 49" monitor sports a 5120 x 1440 resolution on a 60 Hz panel. The panel is of the IPS type with the usual LED edge lighting we've come to expect, which is much cheaper than any form of local dimming technology. The 3800R curve should help users keep the monitor's screen real-estate in their field of vision, which would be harder to do with a flat panel; and the screen's diagoal basically precludes its usage in a multi-monitor setup.





This monitor isn't particularly geared for gamers, with its 60 Hz refresh rate and ludicrous resolution (good luck supporting the 32:9 aspect ratio on most games); it also sports a 5 ms response time. For professionals, though, it's certainly a good effort from Dell's part; the 99% sRGB coverage, 350 cd/m² brightness, and USB-C, with graphical inputs in the form of 2x HDMI 2.0, and 1x DisplayPort 1.4 ports are more than enough for that usage scenario. The monitor also supports dual-PC input for on-the-fly switching of machine display output, which is a bonus for such environments. The U4919DW will be available starting October 26 from $1,699.

Command centers for example, mostly professional or business use. Saves some space and energy compared to two 27" side by side. Plus omitts the bezel.

I can see artists wanting this as well. I know a guy that works at a big game company and something like this could be right up his alley. If you can calibrate it well that is.

Agree. Those pictures aren't helpful, and they show two windows side by side with what looks like a bar down the middle. Googled around a bit and found this... if it is a genuine picture rather than a mock-up, then it appears seamless. Nice. Although 1440 in the y isn't that great for reading PDFs or mapping. I'd prefer a 2160 "y".

Wait, what? 1440 vertical pixels on a panel the same height as a 27" 16:9 is perfectly fine. I read PDFs all day on a panel like that. I still prefer reading on paper, but that's not due to clarity or sharpness.

And yes, obviously this is a single panel.

Part of the point, though, is the ability to divide the panel into two, with separate PCs for each half. The monitor also has a built-in KVM switch. The article does a rather bad job of getting this across.

Yeah, I have a 4K monitor for that, which works a darn sight more effectively than this piece of 1440p nonsense, and takes up a fraction of the space on my desk.
