Stardock's Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is currently available for free until November 18th from Humble Bundle. All you need to do is subscribe to the Humble Store Newsletter, at which point you can request a Steam key for what is considered one of the better space-based 4X grand strategy titles available. Although the title was originally released in 2012, Stardock has since further polished the game by optimizing the in-game graphics, removing the 2 GB RAM limit, adding larger worlds, better stability and improved mod support in an update back in April of 2017. All these changes made what I would consider a good game better, having played it quite a bit myself. That said if 4X strategy titles interest you give Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion a shot, after all, it is free so what do you have to lose?

I've been playing Sins for a while now, Entenchment only though... facing random crashes late game..... Hopefully this fixes it.

I see the Steam version is just an ad for their newer games, but, meh, I'll still play it.

Rebellion received some engine upgrades to be able to use 4GB of RAM and fix some late game issues. Depending on how you setup the game or how many mods you run, it can still bog down...but for me much better and I haven't had Rebellion crash on me in years (barring when I screwed up a mod).

All recent Stardock games have the Stardock launcher that shows Ashes, Star Control, Sins, etc. Many folks have complained...I'm not really bothered by it at this point. Open launcher, click play, enjoy. :)

Would love to see Freespace & Freespace2 remastered @4K.

Well Freespace 2 Open is probably the best you'll get at this point. I do gotta give the fans that keep modding the FS2 engine and updating FSO credit, I don't play it anymore but it was cool to be able to play vanilla and updated HD versions of the FS1 and FS2 campaigns, among all the others that exist. Though I don't play at 4K, so FSO works for me when I do play...for now. Admittedly I've been playing far more Void Destroyer 2 and Elite Dangerous the past couple years than I have the FS series. Maybe someone will do it tho... with all the remasters, this would be a good one to see be a successful one.

Sins is an RTS/4X though, Freespace is an arcade space shooter sim.

I've had it for awhile, the game always seemed like a chore to get into. I could never find any great tutorials and it couldn't hold my attention; and I'm a paradox player lol. Maybe I'll try again.

Well if you play Paradox's Stellaris, SoaSE is a walk in the park since it focuses more on the eXterminate aspect than the empire development and management, those aspects are much more simplified. I still play Sins quite a bit, going between that, GalCiv3 and Sword of the Stars Complete. I gave up on Stellaris, as much as I've paid/invested, I just don't care for the post-early game slog and the sad excuse of what they call combat (not that GC3 is any better in regards to combat). But many folks love it, I can see why, but it isn't for me.

It's pretty time consuming.... I like to play it when I'm on vacation and my wife is sleeping. LOL...

This is a fun game, but beware, this is the steam version, with activation limited DRM. Ask me how I know.

the GoG version, DRM free, is way better.
