According to Jon Peddie Research, overall desktop GPU shipments have fallen by 16% YoY - a not unexpected turn of events considering the state of the crypto mining boom then and now (where it's virtually absent). The YoY change means that production volumes planned during the mining boom are now above and beyond the channel's capability to move them through user demand, hence the diminishing prices in graphics cards (aided by the dump of mining-bought graphics cards in the second-hand markets).

Overall, GPU shipments still increased by 10.64% compared to last quarter in the overall market, fueled mostly by Intel - AMD shipments increased 6.5% Nvidia increased 4.3% and Intel increased 13.1% compared to their own previous shipment quotas. Still, AMD's market share from last quarter decreased -0.6%, Intel's increased 1.5%, and Nvidia's market share decreased -0.97%. JPR also cites the US's additional tax on China imported goods, as well as descending stock market values as reasons for consumers (both singular and business) to be holding off on purchases.

Quick highlights
  • AMD's overall unit shipments increased 6.51% quarter-to-quarter, Intel's total shipments increased 13.11% from last quarter, and Nvidia's increased 4.32%.
  • The attach rate of GPUs (includes integrated and discrete GPUs) to PCs for the quarter was 141% which was up 3.08% from last quarter.
  • Discrete GPUs were in 31.61% of PCs, which is down -3.54% from last quarter.
  • The overall PC market increased 8.22% quarter-to-quarter and increased 0.30% year-to-year.
  • Desktop graphics add-in boards (AIBs) that use discrete GPUs decreased -19.21% from last quarter.
  • Q3'18 saw a decrease in tablet shipments from last quarter.

Well when mining was on top they ignored gamers on PC selling 2-3x boosted prices of GPU-s, and now they have large piles of cards so i am glad that ended like this, now go and sell them cheap but after miners sell all their used cards.

More like Icarus I'd say

Kind of comical that the machine pictured is an 8x HD7970/R280X rig from the 2013 mining boom xD

I feel like there's other things too.
like.. no new gpu that's worth buying since GTX10 series!

And maybe a vega at hilarious prices (like my gtx1070 priced V64)

lets leave cryptos out for a second... are here anything in new GPU market that is exciting to wroth a buy ? or anything that leaves in dust previous generations (that one could have bought for 2.5 years)? or anything that offers so good performance/price or performance/watt that makes buying used previous gen look silly and unworthy?
if answers to all these are no - then wtf are they (amd and nvidia) expecting? an upragde from gtx1060 to gtx1060 gddr5x or something?

most of the cards are still selling well above their msrp
maybe apart from the very few Black Friday deals
try to get a gtx 1080Ti or 2080 for 699 usd or rtx 2080ti for 999 usd
its even worse in Europe

Greedy corporations must suffer! However, this kind of "shorcuts" are barely an issue for those, I wish they would face much more catastrophic sequences in the nearest future - and I don't care if it gonna pause the progress for 2-3-4 years, because:
It already have stopped - we can see it already with those hiking prices and terrible progression;
There alway will be minor companies that could only dream about getting to the top, and they will take an opportunity really fast, if given one;
And at last - those greedy corporation's one and only target is to make profits, so I don't expect anything good from them at all - thus, such a system of "cowards" should be refreshed preiodically.
And when they "stumble" like that, while chasing extra profits, but failing afterwards - it just brings them closer to the end. And thats good.

I hope you realize that for all those wishing eternal suffering on GPU makers: Their suffering is your suffering, particularly if they all just decide to stop making GPUs for you and focusing more on "paying" applications (compute or other fields).

AMD is already pretty much doing this. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

Lolwut? Feeds me? Thats me who feeds THEM (well, not actually me, but customers... whatever)
And you know, you’ve made right point - AMD is doint this already. Thus ngreedia almost doing that, by Increasing x time prices and decreasing x time perfomance gains.

Moreover, considering Tolerantfield V and Failout 76 (generally how stagnant PC gaming today is, with all those royal battles and other tons of bulls*) and numerous great games, that unfortunately became console exclusives - I think I’m gonna be okay with that. Daym, I can’t even name a single 2017-2018 game that I’ve played and liked so far

So how much did the GPU shipments fall from TWO years ago is what I'm interested in. Not a fluke increase in sales created by a fad.

Well, it's not like you can make your own graphics card...

Then you need to get out there and actually play more than a couple of the last 2 years’ games.

I feel sorry for you that you are so jaded you can’t enjoy any of the hundreds of very good games made in that time period.

Not if you ain't buying. And there are other industries that can feed them well and have been while we've been complaining. Don't take yourselves as invincible. This isn't on your terms.

I feel the same. Indies have been kicking ass this year.

Well, ok then - name it. Games that were released since 01.01.2017 for PC, and which were astonishing.

P.S. I have a feeling that we're speaking different languages - instead of getting into what I'm trying to deliver, you just neglect and post something different.

Every game I have played I have enjoyed. I sink myself into the story and interact with it. Some I enjoy more than others, but all of these games from the last two years I have played, I have liked and had fun with. The ones which truly excelled for me I have bolded.
