Capcom's "Monster Hunter: World" opened to generally positive reviews on the backs of strong gameplay mechanics, inventory system, and an addictive yet simple RPG quest, although we found it falling slightly short in the eye-candy department, as its visuals and texture-quality felt dated and a good 3-5 years behind what's considered cutting-edge today. Capcom alleviated some of this criticism by releasing a free and optional high-resolution texture pack for the game. The "High Resolution Textures Pack" is an optional feature-update that adds not just significantly higher resolution textures for the game, but also the new "TAA+FXAA" anti-aliasing mode under graphics settings. Rock Paper Shotgun comments that it has also observed some refinements in some of the visual effects. You can get the update from the "DLC" section of your game's Steam page, or this page.

So do I, but this looked like some upscaled PS3 content, and it still kinda does. Low poly everywhere, cheap materials... Steel armor looks like plastic with a coating, excessive use of bloom... yike yike yike

Well its about time! This game had some awful textures. It was one of the reasons I gave it a negative review. Not because textures make a game, but if a large studio with a big budget title manages to port a game over while decreasing textures (seriously, how do you do that!? There were scenes from console which looked better. Parity on visuals is NOT a high bar, especially considering PCs can piss rings around a console) along with some graphical options which did nothing! Thats not acceptable. Must take another look at this now.

And so far every single content update is free, the only paid DLC is the up coming expansion.

Textures are VRAM intensive, so it doesn't help that the most common GPU right now is the GTX1060 3GB and 5GB.
These cards have even less ram than a console. Sure for PS4 the 8GB of GDDR5 is shared between the entire system, but given how lightweight the Console's OSes are they uses less than 1 GB of ram.
Leaving 7GB of ram for the game to run on.

For modern high end cards, it makes almost no difference in performance, they have enough TMU / VRAM / Bandwidth for that.
Only if you have something like a 1060 3GB that you run out of VRAM.

The Steam page is recommending a 1080 Ti or a Radeon VII for 4K at 30 FPS.

They had VRAM to burn, even with those lower targets in mind. And if youre gaming at 1440p or up and have less than 6GB of VRAM, its time to upgrade.

*E: Just turned it on for a bit to see how it looks. As far as VRAM goes, 4K maxed out goes from 6.6 to 8 (estimated in the menu). FPS in 50s to low 60s in town. I turned off fog, never liked it (and my VRAM went to 6.8 - nearly cancelling out the "hi res" textures), FPS was bouncing between 66-78 while running around outside. Playable, but not stellar, and Im sure there would be dips with actions and effects flying around. Game does look a little better, but not a huge improvement. And WTF is up with having to restart in order to turn on HDR, which is weak sauce in this title I must say (didnt even know this game had it, and will forget it has shortly.)

Is this a joke post? Textures basically have no performance hit, its purely storage (vram) that is needed for the larger size textures.

Only 4GB~ of memory on the PS4/Pro is allocated to the GPU.

That sounds about right, that leaves about 3GB or so ram for the rest of the game code.

Glad they released this sooner than later. It looks much better. I don't own this title, but I probably will eventually on a black friday.
