It's not like the stream is over yet... and you have to remember, they will want to hold this chip back until Intel tries a desperate ploy to claw back at gamers. At that point, they can unleash the true 16 core chip to just keep them ahead. Calm down, and think of this from a business perspective. It's more thought out than that.

Other sites say the 3950X won't be ready until September. Probably why they didn't announce it with the rest of the lineup. Certainly suggests that they are binning the best chiplets to the higher margin product--EPYC. Makes me wonder if there will even be a follow up to Threadripper?

I'm guessing that this thing will break 200 W easily if PBO is enabled. I think it's smart for them to limit the chips to a reasonable TDP unless you activate PBO or manually overclock. For the average user, this will give the best experience. I'd much rather have some enthusiasts changing settings than a layperson who bought a prebuilt dealing with thermal issues. Honestly, I think 16 cores is a vanity spec. I'd much rather get the 12 core and have higher multi-core clocks out of the box.

Possibly just great binning. The CCXs aren’t really the most consuming part of the chip, it’s the Infinity Fabric. Maybe the change in design allows them to add cores more easily while maintaining a power budget. Also, consider that many lower-level CPUs have a generic TDP rating that they never come close to reaching. The TDP is often used as a rating for spec’ing proper cooling. I really get the impression that there’s more clock room in Zen 2, and so long as AMD stays under a certain speed, they have really good efficiency.

Same way Intel went from 4c to 8c at nearly the same TDP.

You mean exactly like Intel has between it's CPUs? Or the fact that an Intel 8 core has lower TDP than an Intel 6 core?

TDP is based on base clock and since 3950X's baseclock is lowest among Zen2 models thus they can claim 105W.

I think the 3900x and the 3950x are the big news on here. Not that impressed with the 3800x 8c/16t CPUs because they don´t seem that much cheaper, if we compare how R5 1600 completly obliterated the 7600k for less price and with 3 times (!!!) more threads.

Now my question is wether these TDP figures and performance are something to get excited about or not. Gotta wait for independent reviews to see the clear picture. I think they hide a lot of games from the 1080p comparasions to make it look better than what it is. Like using Black Ops 3 or Devil May Cry is weird... no one cares about 200fps on those games. Wanted to see Battlefield or Escape from Takov wich are really demanding on the CPU and where intel currently crushes AMD.

Also curious about overclocking capabilities, because if only the most expensive chips can reach really high clocks, that´s bad. But let´s see what´s coming.
