AMD Plans Octal-Core Opteron

Debuting in 2009, AMD's third generation Opteron, named Sandtiger, will have 8 Cores on a 45nm die. It will support HyperTransport 3.0 as well as 'G3 Memory Extender,' a new technology that supports larger memory capacities. AMD has not revealed if the new Opteron will support the current socket platform.

I think overall we will be pleased with the coming Phenom line just as we will be pleased to have this new 8 core line in 2009-2010.

The battle between AMD and Intel only makes life better for the consumer.

Shanghai features minor improvements such as a 6MB L3 cache and IPC improvements. The core will continue to have 512KB of L2 cache per core with three HT1 links. Registered DDR2 memory continues to be the memory of choice for Shanghai."

I use AMD parts but this drives me nuts about them. They talk about awsome future products and we have to wait and find out if and when they will actually do it. It just feels like a cheap PR stunt.

amd is looking years down the road and i think that is a sound strategy. after aquiring ati things sorta got bogged down in the bureaucracy of it all im sure. that is just my guess. give them a few years and i think we will see some really great products that will give intel a real run for their money.

nicely said, i think that 2, amd has great architectural designs, but i feel not enough time to get them implemented against intels vast resources and man power, but AMD will rise again, and bite chunks from intels arse in the process

People have been saying that for years... and they're still around. The reality is, every industry needs an "underdog hero". For now, that title goes to little old AMD "fighting" the giant Intel corp.

Is AMD really a hero? No. However, it's fun to pretend they are, and buy their products when they have an edge over Intel.

some games are starting to utilize 4 cores so I thought though. Amd for the 1st time in thier life time had the lead for something like 4-7 years or something now intel just started biting back.. I dont see how people thought amd couldnt survie a few years ago when they were producing the best chips.. mind you all the pc manufatures practically only used intel (contracts?).

i agree and why make more cores when then can make a single core out do a quad easily . . oo i wait i know cause people think more is better

multi core software is in its infancy, but within the nxt couple of years i reckon its gonna go ape shit on us... its the only way to improve performance without a radical increase in hardware specs. so that 8 core, i think, in time to come with be awsome

Only problem I see is Intel is slated to roll out Nehlem in Q4 of next year. I'm betting that along with an integrated memory controller and CSI they're going to bring in octo-core with it.....I may be wrong, but that's what it looks like they're going to do. I hope AMD shoots for something faster than a '09 launch. I also hope Intel doesn't roll out octo-core with Nehlem, but once again that's what I think they're going to do...

Supposedly late this year, and yes.. they will be Socket AM2+, which is backwards compatible with AM2.

However one can "safely" (if there is such a thing) assume there will be a performance hit from using the older HT bus on standard AM2. At least common sense would tell us this.
