Mozilla Leaves Thunderbird

While Mozilla's Firefox continues to make massive marketshare gains and is arguably the best web browser currently the Thunderbird email client hasn't received the same love and attention. Thus the future of the software has come up for debate by Mozilla CEO Mitchell Baker in his latest blog post in which he admits

We have concluded that we should find a new, separate organizational setting for Thunderbird one that allows the Thunderbird community to determine its own destiny.

Three options are under consideration:
* Create a new non-profit organization analogous to the Mozilla Foundation
* Create a new subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation for Thunderbird
* Thunderbird is released as a community project

Baker calls on readers to contact Mozilla with their suggestions while admitting

We don't know the best answer yet. And we don't expect to without a broad public discussion and involvement, which we hope this message will trigger.

Obviously Thunderbird is no longer of interest to Mozilla as their only plans are to overhaul Internet Explorer.

I use thunderbird daily and I know thousands of others that do as well. To me, its the most simple, easiest and cleanest Email client out there with the best antispam filters I know.

Also, why are they worried about fixing Internet Explorer?

thunderbird is free, easy to use, and light on system resources. also there is tons and tons of plugins for it.

TB should definately be continued, but if their options are abandon it or pass it on, passing it on is a good move.

oh and as for those that dont seem to like TB... post some alternatives. we're listening.

Are you trying to start a flame war? Firefox is not the holy grail to web browsers. It's a slow resource hog. Takes ages to load compared to other browsers.

They don't work the same, but allz I gotta do is start up my web browser (instantly) and i'm in my e-mail box. I don't want my PC to download all of my e-mails before I open them. Plus, I can check my email from anywhere in the world without downloading some e-mail client.

But, web-based e-mail is not for everyone.

But, web-based e-mail is not for everyone.

And i open up Tbird, and i have all my emails and attachments already downloaded, so that i can load attachments etc instantly... even when offline *gasp*

oh and because i have a good setup, they're still in Gmail, and not deleted. so i can access them all, online or offline...

But yes people - stop mentioning webSITES, this is about webCLIENTS. i use Thunderbird to view Gmail emails, so saying 'use gmail' is most definately not an alternative to using thunderbird...

pity that i have a 1.5m connection hereplace, and a 24Mb ADSL2+ connection going in at my new place....

Its useful, because i have a laptop. also i dont like wasting bandwidth, if i get an email i want it once, and then i rarely ever want to see it again.

And of course, if other people are using teh net at the same time, offline (or at least not web browsing) usage can really play a lot nicer with gaming/VOIP

thats just personal preference for me however

I use my E-mails all the time. Look up friends ph. numbers, travel information, software keys, etc... I don't know if Tbird dynamically lists e-mail addresses like Gmail does when you start typing. plus, i get a lot of e-mails I don't even bother opening (not spam - just no bother to read). I'd just prefer to not have all of that crap on my PC.

24meg is fn fast. I have 10 meg - but I can only imagine what it'd be like to download 3 megabytes per second.

yeah it'll be up in sept, the wait is driving me insane.

The email in Tbird is the same as you get in Gmail - if its in GMails spam folder, it doesnt leave via pop3... so i dont get covered in junk etc. and Tbird has its own spam filter, in case Gmail misses some.
