Beta Vista Compatibility, Performance and Reliability Packs

Microsoft has released two beta hotfix's for windows vista which are recommended to all gamers and desktop users. However they are not recommended to companies since they are in a beta state.

938194 Vista Compatibility and Reliability Pack
This update resolves a number of individual issues which may be affecting some computers running Windows Vista. These issues have been reported by customers using the Error Reporting service, product support, or other means. Installing this update will improve the reliability and hardware compatibility of Windows Vista in a variety of scenarios. Some examples of the improvements contained in this update are:

* Improved reliability and compatibility of Vista when used with newer graphics cards in several specific scenarios and configurations.
* Improved reliability when working with external displays on a laptop.
* Increased compatibility with many video drivers.
* Improved visual appearance of games with high intensity graphics.
* Improved quality of playback for HD-DVD and Blue-Ray disks on large monitors.
* Improved reliability for Internet Explorer when some third party toolbars are installed on Vista.
* Improved Vista reliability in networking configuration scenarios.
* Improved the reliability of Windows Calendar in Vista.
* Improved reliability of systems that were upgraded from XP to Vista.
* Increased compatibility with many printer drivers.
* Increased reliability and performance of Vista when entering sleep and resuming from sleep.

This update resolves a number of individual issues which may be affecting some computers running Windows Vista. Installing this update will improve the performance and responsiveness for some scenarios and improves reliability of Windows Vista in a variety of scenarios. Some examples of the improvements contained in this update are:

* Improves performance in resuming back to the desktop from the Photo and Windows Energy screensaver.
* Resolves an issue where some secured web pages using advanced security technologies may not get displayed in Internet Explorer on Windows Vista.
* Resolves an issue where a shared printer may not get installed if the printer is connected to a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 system and User Access Control is disabled on the Vista client.
* Resolves an issue where creating AVI files on Vista may get corrupted.
* Improves the performance in calculating the 'estimated time remaining' when copying/moving large files.
* Improves performance in bringing up Login Screen after resuming from Hibernate.
* Resolves an issue where synchronization of offline files to a server can get corrupted.
* Resolves a compatibility issue with RAW images created by Canon EOS 1D/1DS Digital SLR Camera which can lead to data loss. This only affects RAW images created by these two specific camera models.
* Resolves an issue where a computer can lose its default Gateway address when resuming from sleep mode.
* Improves the performance when copying or moving entire directories containing large amounts of data or files.
* Improves the performance of Vista's Memory Manager in specific customer scenarios and prevents some issues which may lead to memory corruption.

Apparently these HotFix's are even better than expected in terms of improvement.

Guys i had a problem downloading them using Firefox so whoever does and finds out that they are corrupt try to download them using IE.

Yep, no problems over here on IE.

Just installed em on my computers and sent a file over the network. Its so much faster and no lag with the estimated time .

Can someone upload the second 64bit file to something like rapidshare, been trying to download it now for around an hour with no success (flashget, IE, FF, nothing :S).

Beta Updates Still suck with Vista.

Watch out installing these. It could be a DRM trap. lol

I installed the 64-bit versions and I see "NO" performance increase. I have benched my CPUs, HDs, and Graphics Card. Nothing went up in performance and my game look different, but I wouldn't say better. Plus they run at the same speeds or slow-e-r.

Now RivaTuner doesn't work due to driver signing being turned back "ON" and it can't fix it like it used too. Also my HP print driver crapped out since these updates.

The updates don't appear to me to do anything. I am going to uninstall them. Do some test and then re-install them.

My rivatuner stopped working too, along with my network.
Holy crap that did the same thing to me, my network died when I installed these, and rivatuner stopped working

you need to disable driver signing, if you read event viewer after first boot it says that it can't start a service because the required driver isn't signed...

Hey ive noticed a better performance (32-bit).

My network is HEAPS faster and a lot of the things in the list have been improved.

Bit of both.

Before the patch, the network took a long time to respond and calculate the time. Sometimes it would be fine, but at other times, it just lagged. For example, a single song took 30 seconds to respond, followed by 10 seconds of transfer, then another 30 second delay and finally went through (around half the time this occured).

Now, the calcuation of time takes around 3 seconds, the transfer begins immediately and it doesnt take as long. A 600MB file took 60-70 seconds, as opposed to around 120-130 from before the patch.

Halo2 runs real bad, need low quality 1024x and only just on virge of playable (quite stuttery). XP on same machine I can run high quality 1680x 2xAA for reasonably smooth game, and they say vista is a better gaming platform

i dont disable it, period its nice and stable this way.

I did read that vistaboot pro failed for at least one person, and the F8 method is the only one working after this update.

And that has what to do with a hotfix? nothing. go to Nvidia.com for Nvidia drivers.

Halo 2 works fine for me, although i do have overkill hardware. I have heard that XP and the crack associated with that speeds it up, however warez discussion is not allowed on TPU. Also, its not related to these hotfixes and therefore shouldnt be in this thread.

I did not see any improved performance with both of these updates. What I can confirm is that these patches broke hibernation in my system. I have the Asus P5WDH-Deluxe and I like to use the supplied remote to hibernate the system and then bring it out of that state. These patches installed would not allow the PC to fully shut power down. Uninstalling them using the Add Remove programs did not fix the situation. Only doing a system restore repaired my system...
