XP Service Pack Three Still on the Cards

Despite there once being rumours of Microsoft dropping service pack three for Windows XP, the software giant has now confirmed that it still intends to keep its old operating system up-to-date with at least one more service pack. Although no information about major changes has yet been leaked, a Microsoft spokesperson said the following:

We're currently planning to deliver SP3 for Windows XP in the first half of calendar year 2008. This date is preliminary, and we don't have any more details to share at this time.

By that time, service pack two (which was quite a huge security update) will have been around for about four years, and given the slow start for Windows Vista, Microsoft may have no choice but to continue supporting its larger consumer market for a few years yet if it doesn't want to upset millions of customers. However, considering that Windows XP is now very secure and stable, the next service pack could turn out to be little more than a bundle of Windows Update patches - unless Microsoft intends to integrate features from Vista such as user account control, which is very unlikely.

SP3 consisting of all patches since SP2 came out wouldnt be a bad thing at all IMO. M$ should stop bullshitting though and at least enable widgets for XP like they once said they intended to do. On the other hand.. they probably realised widgets is about the only thing that truely makes Vista anything different from XP

DX10 is not for XP right? If they include in SP3 we don't need to go to Vista for the purpose of DX10.

Theres still no technical reason why M$ cant release a XP version of DX10. It simply boils down to they cant be bothered and are trying to ram Vista down everybodys throats.

Yeah, I know some that just turned to XP Pro a few months ago. There's no point in a business to get the latest OS, they just need a stable OS for business.

It works great, on a clean boot (which includes everything I use plus widgets) memory usage is only around 200MB in total.

and I only have open aim, word, and firefox. I feel like my os is so untweaked now.

Tune up utilities=better registry cleaning imo. Huh, I used that thread to, lol. But I used it when it first began, and I do have sidebar and superfetch on, probably two big reasons.

Nice to see a SP3...but you all hit the nail on the head, they are trying to cram Vista down our throats. Want DX10? Need Vista, otherwise suffer the masses <G>
