MSI today inadvertently confirmed preparations for the release of TRX40-based motherboards, which will allow for AMD's next-gen, Zen 2-based Threadripper CPUs to slot in quite nicely in a bed of silicon. Via a promo page for new motherboard purchases, where MSI listed the eligible motherboards for a $25 Steam rebate after purchase, the company listed a number of their already-known motherboard quantities... And the new Creator TRX40. This is a new series of motherboards from MSI, first populated by the X299 motherboards, which caters to expandability and storage capabilities so as to accelerate content creation and production.

The reference to the Creator TRX40 has already been silently deleted in MSI's page.

Hmm so X399 won't be getting a taste of Zen2 then.

Bummer for sure. I was hoping to upgrade the lab TR builds :(

If you are buying this kind of high level stuff, I don't really understand the incentive of a $25 steam gift card, seems dumb to me.

Why do you make that assumption? That's a bit like saying AMD is releasing the X570 chipset so Zen2 won't work on older motherboards. I would expect some Zen2 Threadripper sku's to work on X399 just not all of them if they are going to do a octo- channel variant. Would be a major black eye for AMD if they didn't have at least one more generation of TR on TR4.

I'm betting they'll toss x399 aside.

I'm a 1950x owner as well so I am not happy about it.

I feel that is fine, sinceTR's socket was impaired from the beginning. It's using EPYC's socket, which is massive and acutely oversized for the original 16core TR. The 32core TR (2nd gen) had the issue where two of the die had their memory controllers too far from the TR socket DDR fanout, so they couldn't just pull one channel from each die (an AMD engineer was asked this around launch, and that was his reply). While TR 3rd gen would probably resolve the latter, it still wouldn't resolve the over-kill size of the socket and the wasted pins (PCIe lanes and DDR RAM channels).

Now, if TR segmented into two sockets, one smaller socket (4 channel DDR + 64 PCIe) and one that is basically EPYC (8 channel DDR + 128 PCIe), then that would be interesting.

pretty sure that is every year now intel changes sockets, I mean yeah technically some z370 boards work, but if you want full stability you can't do that.

I don't think there has been any concrete evidence to say x399 and prior will be obsolete. Not too long and we will know but I'm sure you will have a solid upgrade path. Question will be if it makes sense to move to the TRX platform to take advantage of any new capabilities that brings.

That's not true for the x299 socket.
I was kinda hoping that they would at least follow the same compatibly that epyc had since they are basically the same thing.

Edit...
Hmmm, my gigabyte x399 just got an agesa update?! (Wasn't there yesterday)
  1. Update AGESA 1.1.0.2
  2. Supports 4*PCIe x4 bifurcation

My guess is that TR3000 "Sharktooth" (up to 32core, 64pcie, 4channel mem) will be compatible with TR40 and X399. I don´t see the reason why AMD would break backwards compatibility if they don´t need to. The only drawback would be that you are stuck with pcie gen3, same as with Ryzen3000. Any thoughts?

Next is TR3000 "Castle Peak" (up to 64core, 128pcie, 8channel mem) that will only be compatible with TR80 chipset. This is no surprise since all X399 motherboards lack space/traces for 8channel mem.

Educated guess is that "Sharktooth" up to 24core and motherboards featuring TR40 will be available this November at launch, at the same time announcing upcoming "Sharktooth" 32core and "Castle Peak" up to 64core along with TR80. As for WRX80, I dont know. Maybe AMD will announce it and its compatible cpus in November at the same event.
