Free games are always hard to pass, so if you are craving some meaty releases to tide you over until something new and fresh that catches your fancy comes along, this Epic Games Store might (and might not) be for you. From October 17th through October 24th, the digital storefront so many love to hate is offering two generally well thought-off games i the form of Observer and Alan Wake's American Nightmare.

Whether you crave a meaty, cyberpunk-inspired detective story in Observer, or a not so meaty, all-hell-broken-lose experience set in the excellent Alan Wake universe, you can drop by your Epic Games Store Launcher (we know you have it installed, come on) and just add them to your cart for free. They're yours to keep forever. And if you don't have the Epic Games Store launcher, perhaps you should. Observer might very well make it worth all the hassle of downloading and clicking through a menu three or four times. And as a very relevant footnote, the Epic Games Store has just started its Halloween Sale, which goes from today, October 18th, through November 1st. You can find some older games discounted up to 70%, with the discount decreasing somewhat linearly according to release date.

It's a pretty nice give away this time. I already had the Alan Wake game but I picked up Observer.

I have already played through Observer. It is a bit confusing.
I have played Alan Wake on EPIC and will try Alan Wake's American Nightmare as I like Horror Games.

I was thinking about this yesterday when I "bought" these games from the Epic Games Store. It struck me that adding a game and "buying" it was becoming comfortable to me after the 20-odd games I've gotten free so far. They're training me to use the store and become accustomed to all of the install steps, all of the game management, all of the clicks to open the EGS and start a game. And that's really a big hurdle for some of these stores, where a new store feels maybe less safe, or less convenient, than what we all have been doing for years, which is to buy a game through Steam. So even though they're hemorrhaging money over at Epic with these glitzy giveaways of some actually pretty decent games (it's really great to have Enter the Gungeon on my PC as well as Switch now), they are doing a lot to get people inadvertently acclimated to the process, even though I have only bought one game for money through the store so far.

It's so far now that I have some games on EGS that make me use it fairly regularly. So I am a user, and a lot of that is because now I have a seed of a library there. Without the free games, I would be hesitant to go buy anything and use the launcher for "just one game." I was always less prone to the notion that EGS is universally a bad addition to the market for PC games, but now I'm a user just because I like free things. Over the span of tens of thousands of similar people getting these games every single week, there must be a sizable portion that are now potential customers for Epic. Apparently you can buy your way into this business.

Pffft. Guilt. :p

I just checked and I've gotten 47 free games on EGS thus far. Of those 47 I had already owned/played 21 of them on other platforms. Of the remaining 26 I've played 3 of them, though I intend to try a few others. I've only bought 4 games so far but with this sale I might pick up a few more. EGS has given away some pretty stellar games so far, including some of my favorites in their respective genres like Inside, What Remains of Edith Finch, Transistor, Limbo, Oxenfree and the Arkham Trilogy. Not to mention some other solid titles like Rime, Super Meat Boy, This War of Mine, Metro 2033 and Abzu. And there's still more...

Observer is not much of a game really, more like a movie, but it's intriguing nonetheless.

If only THIS was their outreach instead of exclusives, I think everyone would be singing their praises. Also, I wish they'd choose games I don't already own. 99% of the ones they are giving me, I own them. I begin to wonder if they aren't looking at my Steam library.

For me it’s mostly been GOG games I own. I think the commonality is Epic is pretty much only filling their store with quality games versus the loads and loads of crappy bad and half finished games that overhwhelms us in some other stores.

Sweeney has already said numerous times that EGS won't have shovelware.

So I picked up Surviving Mars right now from EGS, for free.

Tried looking at the DLC it has, because Green Planet expansion does tickle me quite a bit... prices even with discount are more expensive than just getting the full deal on Steam, where you can have the game 100% complete for 22 euros. On EGS, just Green Planet is already 17 eur - and that is with a 33% discount apparently.

Be aware once you buy additional content, I'm sure this happens all the time. Its not always as free as you might think. After all, I can't expand my EGS game with Steam's DLC.

Epic Games supports trademark violations, i never buy a game or even take a free one

Epic also identifies the violator rather than removing the infringer

Whenever I see harsh or wild allegations without a single legitimate citation, I always ask for those original source links in order to confirm the merits of the allegation. If you would be so good, please provide. :)

Good on you, I'm expanding my library for free instead. What's more, most things I download through EGS can just run without it, so that's nearly identical to getting free GOG releases.

Convince us, bring that source!
