Here are some of the first pictures of the Frost Spirit by Thermalright, the company's next flagship air CPU cooler. Featuring a dual fin-stack design, the Frost Spirit features dense fin-stacks, in which the fins bunch up toward the center, creating turbulence and increasing heat-dissipation to the medium (air-flow). The fin-stack gets slimmer toward the base, adding clearance for your motherboard's memory and CPU VRM areas. Four 8 mm-thick nickel-plated copper heat pipes pull heat from the mirror-finish nickel-plated copper base, spreading it across the fin-stacks. Both stacks are capped off by metal top-plates. Up to three 140 mm fans can be mounted. The heatsink weighs 1 kg on its own (without fans). Among the CPU socket types supported are AM4, LGA115x, and LGA2066. It could see a product launch soon.

Well the look of the finstack is a really pleasing to the eyes. Whether it performs as good as it looks, remains to be seen.

As said in the opening post, it's for sockets AM4, 115x and 2066.
The contact surface of the base to CPU is too small for use with TR4 itself - Meant to be a "Big Air" cooler for the sockets named.

Noice, I had some thermalright direct one coolers from ages ago and they still perform admirably compare to cheap AIO or recent and more expensive tower cpu coolers.

Nice looking and a good price but......1kg by itself, yowza ???

Also, why have 2 different styles of fans ?

Hope you gots a mucho strong mobo pcb, otherwise this thing is gonne be droopin bigtime, at least in a normal vertical set-up.

I had a spirit cooler years ago and don't remember it being anywhere near that heavy....but oh well :)

This is mid tier ? What's next, a car radiator?

Looks good. If this gets priced well, it will blow Noctua and BQ out of the water. If they give us the Grand Macho fan (looks like it, the middle one) and ditto quality... sweet.

You might like to know about the Watercool MoRa 360 and 420 units. They're basically car radiators but in prettier casing.

I loved my XP-90 and Ultra 120 coolers but they haven't had much of a retail presence in the UK for at least a decade.

Definitely not a flagship, nice to see them making the other guys squirm a bit.

Those 8mm heatpipes tho.

Really interested to see performance of 4x8mm vs 6x6mm

  • Area of 6mm circle is 28.26sq mm while 8mm is 50.24sq mm.
  • Surface area is 18.84 mm while 8mm is 25.12mm.
  • 8x 6mm heatpipe cooler has 226.08sq mm while 6x 8mm heatpipes have 301.44sq mm total crossectional area.
  • Both 8x 6mm and 6x 8mm heatpipe coolers have 150.72mm surface are.
While 6x 8mm heatpipes have same surface area as 8x 6mm heatpipes (150.72mm), 6x 8mm heatpipes have way more volume (301.44 vs 226.08sq mm). I think this allows improved vapor flow from cooler base toward ends of heatpipes, and thus better heat transfer.

I'm terribly lazy with math, so I quoted doyll from another forum talking about True Spirit 140 Power. I have that cooler running on an x5690 as we speak.

Nice looking and a good price but......1kg by itself, yowza ???

As long as you actually tightened the screws holding your mobo down, it should be fine. I still occasionally see people who are afraid to turn a screw all the way down.

Fin stack gap is on the large size for using 3x 140mm fans, could prolly get away with 1 fan for most days. Although, thinking, if 3 fans were on separate controllers could shut off 2 of them during idle times.

Well the look of the finstack is a really pleasing to the eyes. Whether it performs as good as it looks, remains to be seen.
I for one will be sad if (and a BIG IF) air coolers become extinct. I just love a thicc air cooler filling up the empty space inside the box.

It's priced 259RMB, roughly 37USD
Hmmm... That isn't encouraging. I agree that good performance should absolutely demand high price. If it beats Cryorig H5 Ultimate at that price, I'll be impressed.

I think calling it a "monstrosity" is very unfair.

Monster sure.

Monstrosity has negative connotations.

Lets look at a couple of definitions of monstrosity.

a thing, especially a building, which is very large and unsightly.

a thing which is outrageously evil or wrong.

Similar terms are...
eyesore, horror, carbuncle.

I don't think any of those definitions or terms suit this cooler. It actually looks pretty damn nice, especially those top plates.

could @btarunr maybe amend the title to reflect this? Or was it his intention to disparage an air cooler that actually looks like it might be rather good and good looking? :)

Thanks!

Good question,...

Not sure but one would suspect it has something to do with clearance and physical space limitations. The center fan is physically larger then the outer fan. Oddly enough, in the center of the fin stock you don't have to worry about space as much because you don't have to clear RAM, power chock heatsinks and the like.

Just a guess,....

Be quiet do 2 different fan types on the dark rock pro X coolers too, the centre fan is a 135mm and the outside fan is 120mm for clearance. Looks like it's similar reasoning here.

Would need to see specs to know the sizes :)

Well, whatever the reason, I don't need specs to tell me that having 2 different sizes of fans makes the whole thing look gaudy AF....

like an overweight porker trailer park ho squeezed into a super tight corset kind of way... y.u.k...

It's a combo of TL-C12 and TL-D14. The 120mm fan is used to avoid ram. Dual tower using 140mm fan as intake fan need to be pushed up a little bit to avoid ram socket.

This will cause the total height more than 168mm as Noctua NH-D15 in my case. So a 120mm fan is a smart choice while TL-C12 has been proved a neat fan whose stats and noise level very similar to Noctua A12x25. You may find some comparison test in some Chinese websites.

1kg for dual tower cooler is normal. My NH-D15 with two fans is 1.3kg in total.
