MSI Showcases the Creator 17 - "world's very first" Mini-LED Laptop

MSI at CES 2020 presented the "world's very first" laptop with a built-in display that uses Mini LED technology, called the Creator 17. Equipped with a 17-inch, 4K panel, the Creator 17 is a charming portable content creator PC. Incorporating the new Mini LED technology, this laptop's display outshines every commercial laptop screen. With a maximum peak brightness of up to 1000 nits, it beats most of the competition. Capable of displaying 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, this laptop screen is ready for displaying all of the HDR content you can throw at it.

When it comes to the Mini LED technology itself, it allows individual LEDs inside the screen to be less than 2 mm in size, which is very small and allows for some creative solutions. For example, MSI used this advantage to enable the display to have 240 local dimming zones, representing a big improvement in this size range compared to IPS. Another big improvement that Mini LED brings is that HDR content will get an upgrade as well. Due to the nature of Mini LEDs, the display can achieve a very distinguishing level of contrast between dark and bright areas. CPU support includes options of Intel's 10th generation Core i9 processor, while the GPU option is unknown. For storage, there are slots for two NVMe PCIe 3.0 M.2 SSDs and one M.2 SATA SSD slot.

If I'm not mistaken, mini-LED is a backlight technology for LCD. You may be thinking of MicroLED.

Seems that MSI is sole manufacturer which understands that creators needs a metric tons of storage. Just like current SKUs P 65/75, you can possibly cram 8 TB across - easily accessible! - 3 mounting points (2x2TB NVMe + 4TB 2.5" SSD) or even more if you squeeze somehow that 15.36 TB 2.5" SSD which technically should be possible. Sadly they don't sell all models world-wide, only in selected places and their top of the line model is like pink unicorn. Haven't seen it anywhere outside MSI website. Top spec P75 just fit the bill for me at least to ditch the desktop for rendering.

Yes, Intel makes 8C/16T 45W SoCs as well. MSI is already using them in other laptops.

Yes, Intel makes 8C/16T 45W SoCs as well. MSI is already using them in other laptops.

And then came intel which released their new 10 core cpus before amd new cpu release so that their cpu would be benchmarked against older amd cpus not the new ones (same case as you just mentioned). And that is a company who are proud of gamers performance only by their comparison/charts.


Don't know how about you, but I'm happy to see on laptops 16 threads against 8 threads . Where we had 8 threads for how many years?

There was simply 0 chance that this thread didn't include an amd fanboy begging for attention. Yes, amd has some great products now, we agree. But given how well AMD is executing now and how in deep shit intel is (stuck on a 5+ year old manufacturing process) the fact that 9980HK can be directly compared, at least from a perf perspective to a brand new cpu built on the best fab process there is with the newest uarch in the block, that is 4800H and most certainly tie (we'll see on real benches, but they should be pretty close) is something you can't argue or deny. So yeah, for how bad Intels situation is, their products are still ok, if not the best. And for sure, it is not an end of the world for someone who buys now a 9980hk laptop since he wil get 95% of amd gives with much much newer product.

It'll come down. There is also OLED, which is cheaper, but not cheap by any means.

Technically Micro-Led would be better, but its also tech that is just too difficult to do atm, so Oled seems like the way to go the coming 2 years or so

I have been reading about it for many months, over a year now. how can you have missed the articles detailing Tiger Lake? they are and have been in-depth articles on the new architecture all over the web. do you ignore technology from Intel? strange if yes.
