The Electronic Entertainment Expo (hence, E3) was, for years, one of those unmissable tech events with an unmistakable gravitas. All companies that actually meant something took attendance to woo the globe with the latest games, entertainment systems, and advances in technology. It still retains most of that glamour, even if some of its sheen is slightly rubbed off already. However, we can expect E3 2020 to the stage for a number of reveals from companies, and one of those companies is Microsoft. Phil Spencer has already confirmed that Microsoft will have a strong presence at E3, and with that being the case, you can expect new games, more information on already announced games (more Halo Infinite, please), and additional information pertaining the company's Xbox Series X games console.

But while some are still betting on E3, others have started to go their own way by organizing their own events. Sony has announced that they will be skipping E3 2020 in favor of hundreds of smaller, yet more globally seeded events, citing that the Entertainment Software Association's (ESA) vision for their 2020 show doesn't exactly align with what Sony is aiming at with its products. Still, you know 2020 will be a packed year for gaming, both in the console and PC spaces.

Yeah. I think the managers in the companies all over the world are getting dumber although there are exceptions.
What they are trying to do with this is make things looks special. Will people buy it? I'm sure not everyone.

All the hate for Sony passing on the Expo and yet M$ is going to have next to no exclusives. Consoles have risen and fallen by the exclusives. The Xsex might as well just have a boot Windows option.

I thought Sony did the same with PS4 and only announced the controller, and M$ made jokes on Sony but then the Xbox one turned out to be the joke?

Sony has their own vision of E3, I don't see them bankrupting themselves any time soon since for years PS was one of their top earners. Hell, they've made $78 billion on it in 2018.
What's the point of E3 anyway? So you can visit to watch some trailers? It's not the 90s anymore when the only alternative was reading about the announcements in a magazine a month later. You can watch the entire thing online now. Beside Sony has its own State of Play event where they announce new titles, four times a year...

Beside, the final battle will be in pricing. If Microsoft reveals theirs during the E3 Sony can easily counter it in fall.

The new Xbox. Looks like a modern ashtray. Well done MS...

As for Sony's presence; I think @Chomiq said it well. People scour the web regardless of event or country these days - especially Sony's target audience.

E3 is like the Superbowl for advertising of electronics. It's a dumb move.

Superbowl? More like little league. Last year they had about 70k visitors during the whole event. Compare it to Gamescom - 370k visitors. People have this vision of E3 being a major event. It's not, at least not anymore. It's a marketing option. Instead of shelling out money for E3 conference Sony has decided to put it elsewhere.

in terms of advertisement, not in terms of attendance. the Superbowl is watched by millions, not visited by millions
more importantly Sony had minimal presence even at Gamescom last year

XSX's case is like PC mini-tower case.

By that definition Sony can easily get by with their state of play events and that's what they're doing. Cost optimization.

What makes E3 and other press conference that gets broadcast special are the hidden surprise factor. Remove that element and its really just company paying excess bills to get presented at a location.
Nintendo hasn't had a proper E3 live stage conference for past years and got by just fine, now Nintendo and Sony are doing small live digital presentations is there really a need for them to pay for a presentation stage?
Also with things getting leaked and social media activities from publishers posting new articles + trailers release. Where is the element of surprise now? Virtually gone really.

Nintendo still calls their direct “Nintendo Direct for E3” though and exploits the coverage of E3, their games are among the best of E3 etc. State of play are small events with less exposure. There no way a gamer will miss reading someth8ng about E3, it a lot more probable to miss a state of the play all together ( the same goes for directs and xbox events)

I've never seen coverage of Gamescon online myself. I have always seen E3 on Twitch. Times may have changed but I'll be honest and admit I don't have time to sit and watch anything these days and worse yet, I don't have time to play games anyways
