This year's Game Developers Conference (GDC) that will take place in March is forming to become a very interesting one. According to the GDC schedule platform, Intel is having a presentation about its upcoming Xe graphics card architecture. Saying that "Intel's brand new Xe Architecture, has been teased for a while, and is scheduled for release later this year! This update brings a significant compute, geometry and throughput improvements over today's widely used Gen9 and Gen11 graphics.", Intel is giving us a slight hint of what is to come.

Presented by Intel's senior developer relations engineer, Antonie Cohade, the talk will include an in-depth look of the Xe hardware architecture and its implementations. Said to introduce "powerful new features", the talk about Xe graphics should include a mention of the latest trend in the world of 3D graphics, ray tracing, and show us what are the capabilities of the new GPU architecture.

Very much looking forward to this. We have a potential upside to Intel stepping into the gaming GPU ring if they are on par with Nvidia in performance and the prices are competitive and they can deliver proper drivers for their GPUs.

You are placing a lot of faith in a company that has done a lot of shady things.

I was watching a video from PC world yesterday and the comment from Gordon was that he said they had Warframe running and he thought that maybe it was getting between "30 and 40 FPS at 1080P". If that is true this will be a budget card no faster than a 1050 or RX560. I sincerely hope they are wrong though and this card can compete with the 5700Xt of 2070 at 2/3 or 1/2 the price but that may be a pipe dream.

Why would they price it so low compared to the same performance? Answer : they won't.

If anything it would likely be the same or slightly lower for the same performance from amd or nvidia. And it will be entry level /low mid range, unless they release higher skus

You are placing a lot of faith in a company that has done a lot of shady things.

The only 2 companies on my gaming radar that I trust less than Intel is EA and MS. That's why I used the word "if".

Intel hasn't proven any of the things I mentioned in post #3 and until they do then I won't have any faith in them and if they don't come through then I haven't lost anything that I have right now with Nvidia and AMD. I just won't have gained anything.

Still I am looking forward to seeing what they bring to the table.

The machine running Warframe was a version of the card being powered only through the PCI-e slot, so <75w. They also showed a version running Destiny 2 from a laptop variant of the chip. The intent of these cards at the moment are for samples to go to developers and ISV's. The CES showing was to prove they have a working architecture, not performance potential. I don't feel that that this will help them build momentum and mind share though leading up to the launch and proper benchmarks being released....

The card that Intel has shown is just for developers to start working with the architecture. It's not a representation of the final product, nor the maximum performance they can get out of the Xe uArch. Some sites even said that the DG1 is just a ~25W mobile GPU placed on a dedicated card form factor.

That said, maybe this DG1 is just the bottom of the barrel.

This DG1 GPU, as well as the upcoming Tiger Lake laptops, both have the weakest Xe LP laptop grade variant inside. With Xe LP, we’re talking about a 20-ish watt GPU

From Intel's prior disclosures, we know that the Xe architecture will span across three segments: Xe-LP for low-power chips like the DG1 that will land in ultra-mobile products, Xe-HP for high performance variants, and Xe-HPC for chips destined for the high performance computing market.

Hmhm, you forget the biggest one: time to market and availability, two things Intel has some problems with lately....

I know that is what they said but Warframe is in no way a demanding game. With the way Intel has been fumbling with paper launches and meh releases I cannot agree with that sentiment more. I for one am interested to see how the card(s) will perform when released into the wild. It will probably have a serious NDA too.

I didn't see intel flooding the world with TIs and Supers just not to lower the prices. So they are still not as shady as you-know-who

Read the news on the Xeon M's? They charged an extra $7 grand for the same silicon just for the ability to use more than 1TB memory. Today its news because due to these annoying Epyc cpus which gives you for free with all their Epyc cpus 4Tb addressable memory. It's news today cuz Intel was forced to stop doing this for obvious reasons. There isn't any co. shadier than this, the level that they will monetize the tiniest perf factors is INSANE.

I'm not a fan of any of the companies mentioned in this thread... :).

I just believe that competition is good for the consumer...so have at it Intel. Best of luck to you and if you can deliver some bang/buck...I might buy one of your products.

Albeit...considering the premium the red/green teams have given their graphics cards in this last round of releases. It'll probably be a purchase in the aftermarket...

Best,

Liquid Cool

its one big fishing expedition.

With this card Intel is clearly looking for, among other things, bugs and performance feedback, possibly for code improvements. This might be considered speculation, but they are still fishing here.

That Linus video is just stupid, all Intel did was release low end numbers for an obviously low end card. He said it himself too, it's PCIe bus powered, of course it's going to be low end performance, why does he act so surprised. They should first get pricing data, find out who the target consumers are, then dump on it if it's not up to par.

I don't have insider trading information, but a lot of the "techtubers" that attend CES do, and not one of them is excited for this launch.

Foreshadowing.

Rubbish. Been watching many of them long enough to know when they are containing their excitement and reserving judgement til they see a final product and that is exactly what they are doing.
