Let me guess... it's caused by climate change? 190+ charged arsonists (plus however many haven't been found/charged yet) in NSW alone would disagree with you there...
This is just utterly careless, yet intentional misuse of statistics used by News Corp in an anti-climate change push.
Reading into an article with a title insinuating that a large number of bushfires were lit by arsons, you will actually learn that the statistics used were the count of arsons arrested over the three states of Victoria, NSW and Queensland during the entire year of 2019. Most of the arrests were in regards to illegal fireworks, incorrect disposal of cigarettes, bin fires, etc. It saddens me that, in a time of crisis where people have died, 1000s of homes have been destroyed, possible a billion animals have perished (
and few now may now be even closer extinction), that corporations like this are still trying to
push their agendas. How can the 'journalists' live with themselves when they're knowingly misleading people ?
... fires don't light themselves, bush doesn't spontaneously combust, and dry lightning has contributed almost nothing to the destruction.
The truth is most, if not all, major fires still burning across
Australia have been started by lightning. Now, this is not out of ordinary - fires are started every year over the summer when such storms form, but what is out of the ordinary is that these fires are burning landscapes that have never been able to burn in the past. These fires have been able to burn almost unhindered in areas such as the temperate rainforests of Gippsland, Victoria where natural fire breaks such as lush gullies and water lands would normally prevent or limit the devastation. Australia has been experiencing much hotter, drier conditions for longer than ever before. I would have to agree with the scientists when they say climate change is the cause. Extreme weather events are only going to become more common - I mean,
take a look at this. Canberra, the nations capital, has been surrounded by bush fires for months, now it's been battered by a freak hailstorm in the middle of summer!
