ASUS Launches the ROG STRIX XG17AHPE Portable Gaming Monitor

Today, ASUS launched another additional product in its lineup of portable monitors, called the ROG STRIX XG17AHPE. This portable gaming monitor features a 17.3-inch display with an astonishing 240 Hz refresh rate. Being targeted at "gamers on the go" this monitor is equipped with features to make the user experience as good as possible. Featuring a 17.3-inch IPS panel with a 1080p resolution, the display of this monitor is very decent. Maximum brightness goes up to 300 nits, the contrast ratio is 1000:1, and the panel has 3 ms GtG response time. The Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology used is VESA's Adaptive-Sync.

When it comes to the I/O options, the display is capable of taking a USB-C (that is capable of DisplayPort alternative mode) or Micro HDMI 2.0 as its inputs. There is a built-in ESS Sabre 9118 DAC to transfer digital audio signals to an analog signal for speaker and headphones output. There are also two 1 W stereo speakers integrated into the monitor body. To power the monitor there is a 7800 mAh battery capable of providing 3.5 hours of usage.

I was just watching a YT video the other day where some guy was making repairs to a portable device (could of been a laptop or gaming console) and then hooked it up to this very same monitor here to test that it outputted video.

I'll have to go through my viewing history to see which video it was

I doubt some random Chinese display would be 240Hz though.

You can find lots of em around... but mostly they're low-grade ips panels. Asus even makes some. But I've never seen any with remotely these specs.

Seems like kind of a waste. Maybe something for an itx build. But aren't there better options? Not sure who these are for.

Portable monitors are nothing new. There are dozens if not hundreds of cheap Chinese ones, most of them terrible, and also a decent selection from recognizeable companies (Asus has quite a few). Few to none of them are high refresh rate though, let alone 240Hz, none (or at least very few) support FreeSync, very few have batteries, and ... well, just because this is a new product in an existing category doesn't mean it's not new. Do you say this every time a company launches a laptop too? "I think this is a rebadged product, I just saw a YT video the other day where some guy was typing on this laptop and it looked really similar to this"? Nobody else sells a product like this (though the design is certainly not anything new for a portable monitor, but it's not like there's that much room to work with for creative designs there).

It's not rebadged, apparently. I've been trying to find a "cheaper" alternative that is also 144Hz/240Hz, 15.6" to 17", dual USB-C and IPS. Another important fact is that this actually has a good DAC which some SoundBlaster products use.

EDIT: I found a couple on Amazon. This is a G-STORY 144p 120Hz one which I just bought LOL

Ah, I had forgotten about G-story. The use of a TN panel makes it a no-go for me though.

I cancelled that order and bought this one instead, which is a smaller 15.6" @ 1080p LG panel, but 165 Hz and IPS.

Seems like they have launched new models since I had a look at their wares last - they didn't have any FreeSync ones back then, and I don't remember seeing anything above 120Hz either. Good that they're moving forward. I would still be worried about calibration, but it doesn't look half bad. Then again, at (a rumored) $100 more for a bigger screen, built in battery, faster refresh rate, sleeker design (IMO), warranty from a reputable company and very likely better calibration the Asus is looking like a pretty decent deal.

(Its also worth mentioning that Amazon doesn't ship electronics to Norway and nobody here sells G-Story, so getting my hands on that would be tricky.)

If ASUS releases that XG17AHPE soon (as in within 30 days so I can return this G-STORY), I'll consider getting it if it launches lesser than $399.
