TSMC is working hard to ensure its number one spot in the semiconductor manufacturing industry, and it has the funds to back it up. Yesterday TSMC's Board of Directors approved the company budget for another semiconductor fab expansion. With a budget totaling 6.74 billion US dollars allocated, TSMC has "Approved capital appropriations of approximately US$6,742.1 million (approximately NT$200.9 billion) for purposes including: 1) Fab construction, and installation of fab facility systems; 2) Installation and upgrade of advanced technology capacity; 3) Installation of specialty technology capacity; 4) Installation of advanced packaging capacity; 5) Second quarter 2020 R&D capital investments and sustaining capital expenditures."

TSMC is kicking things up a notch I see. If they have the cash and can invest they should go for it.

Oh hell, while they are at it, why not just go balls to the wall and build some .0000001 sub-nm fab plants (we know they wanna), then maybe we could finally get some REAL improvements in chip tech... instead of the usual 1-5% nonsense that we've had to put up with for the past 10 yrs or so......

Why don't you do it? It's different to want something and to have resources to do it.

Not gonna happen. A 7nm feature is already like 20 atoms (iirc) across.

I believe they can do it, but they won't. They want us to part with that lovely money we have every one or two years. If they gave us such a product, that would last us a life time & probably the next two or three generation of our family.

All in Taiwan I'd presume, likely for 7nm & 5nm capacity expansions. Just guesstimating based on the pent up demand, so don't quote me on that.

That is how you stay at the top. You invest your earnings on R&D and expansions. Not on higher pay checks for high ranking employees.

Meanwhile, a certain company has spent at least 40 billion on a failed node with one fab kinda operational.

I think I see which one is the market leader. If only those paychecks could buy brains.

If you're gonna go that route, do it right and go for (peaty) scotch. Though Maker's Mark is not too shabby either.

So are they going to build the whole fab into a 7nm node wafer?

Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon, Yellow Rose Outlaw Bourbon, Ben Millam Bourbon, Ranger creek .36 Texas straight Bourbon, Treaty Oak Ghost Hill Bourbon, Iron Wolf Bourbon, etc. are the best :) But if you don't have these around, Jack Daniels or Henry Mckenna will have to do the trick :)

Getting back on the subject.
If TSMC is going for an extension of the FAB does it mean just one? Maybe they will go for extensions of the biggest they've got? It hasn't been said it is only one certain fab that get's extended.

Here's an idea. Since everyone here is about AMD vs Nvidia, AMD vs Intel and such, should we start flaming each other about scotch vs bourbon? :D

Hang on, I'll email you some 0.1nm process blueprints, got them here somewhere between my quantum computing and AI research.

Honestly, as long as there's booze I'm ok :) Although, as you already know, I got my favorites :D
If scotch, then Glenfiddich 15 and up as a single malt and Cutty Sark as blended :D

Glenfiddich is actually pretty bland, imho. There are others with more personality.
However, bland as it is, Glenfiddich is still pretty darn good. That's why I love scotch ;)

Never tried Cutty Sark (but I will, now) and I enjoy Laphroaig, even though I know it's not for everybody (it's a love it or hate it thing).
