Anad is right... Exynos design is on the brink...as they say stinks. EU customers have no choice to pick up QC based S20 and that's the issue. For the higher price we get inferior product. Samsung is really a good as an average maker, well except really making so much crap middle end phones, leaving me with headache, sometimes I cannot remember even the marketing name for them, only the codename. Making those middle segment phones, they do mistakes, and gosh how many, thus racking a bad rep... the stink covers even the good things they make.

I haven't had many S20 boards my hands yet and evaluate the power tables and their averages ie silicon quality. But already with S10 I rarely saw ASV tables better than 3. Average battery life got worse versus older S9 gen, they have to clock it higher to cover the arch deficiency. My Qualcomm SD based devices, like Sony, LG and weird rare makers not worth mentioning do work faster in many workloads, including web and gaming and have better battery life without much thinking about it. They don't have the power to market and do not pay for better reviews and do not tamper benchmarks that often...

@R0H1T calm down. It is a fact. Even best XDA devs are spitting on Exynos with last gens and said no more of that crap. If you put besides an US and RoW versions with Exynos and QD of the same version, they differ a lot speed wise... If you have that opportunity do the testing yourself... don't indulge much on reading reviews, they have often cherry picked devices also running alternate software. It is simple you know...

I have to accent, I have to deal with them personally all my time... as it is my job... I know mobile HW as my backyard on smallest element level, and the heck it evolves just by blinking an eye... truly a tech spearhead, PC has fallen behind a bit actually. AMD stepping in seemed to be a logical step.

i dont think Qualcomm will let AMD or anybody else beat them...xD

Lets see

it doesn't matter if there is other SoC that can beat them significantly when it comes to GPU performance. qualcomm will still going to win the market. the thing is for the majority of phone makers having qualcomm chip is crucial because of their baseband/modem tech. and you can only get them bundled with qualcomm snapdragon package. for years qualcomm no longer license their baseband/modem to be used with other SoC except for apple. and even that probably going to end soon since both company have issues on the licensing fee.

Unsurprisingly, one performance metric is not enough to paint any kind of picture. But it's nice to know performance is (potentially) up there.

"181 FPS in Manhattan 3.1 test (up 47% from Adreno 650)"

87 > 181 = +47% ?

its like +108%

"...the Qualcomm Adreno 650 GPU, which scored 123 FPS in Manhattan 3.1 test..."
181 / 123 = 1.47

anyone conflating this with their alleged "lack of support" seems to be living in cuckoo land
In my land support doesn't really end with software updates. A complex physical device needs more than just a few lines of code patched.
As for the software, Apple are making their latest OS updates to some very old devices, where Sammy drops to quarterly security patches (on select devices, bear in mind) after 2 years.

They lead in ST performance in what ? Geekbench ? Worlds worst benchmark proven by the fact the fact that the scores it generates do not coincide with reality.

Have a look at this : https://www.anandtech.com/show/1560...xynos-snapdragon-review-megalomania-devices/6

Exynos custom cores are considerably worse in pretty much everything, you'd just be ignoring reality if you thought otherwise. If they are so great why are they stopping production of new designs ?
Also, check this vid
It shows neatly all that is wrong with the Exynos.

Next phone, will be bought purely on where it is made.
So, by that logic we should settle to inferior products and agree to be force fed garbage, so companies can keep the investors happy?

It's exactly the same with people - I don't discriminate against race or religion, all I care about is how a guy behaves.

You know, this image compression low shading techniques started with mobile computing, I'm sure AMD can set the new trend this time porting the developed console implementations. Half resolution page formatting is what I'm talking about. What AMD has to offer is bitswizzle. If rendering pipeline is used, you suddenly have 2x better aa just for the benefit of using this rotated grid instruction. I sometimes notice these jagged edges around fonts, such issues are set and dealt with using the compute hardware acceleration. I can even name the stuff, thanks to dice.

I am, and it is rather unimpressive. 'Surprising' it is not. Its a GPU and it pushes pixels and mobile has a much lower TDP to work with. It can do some 3D with ultra low res texture, cool.

I mean... Dead by Daylight. A disturbed mess of pixels. Is this really impressive?
Its cool they're making progress... but its not hard to make big jumps from nothing.

For giggles, here is what a PSP in 2005 could do... at 60 FPS locked

Because we all know how demanding that is for the GPU, right? ;)

It is actually quite light, not bruteforcing your right of way. Compute shaders are 100x faster than pixel shaders, afaik.

Telephony is handled in a separate part of the SoC (the modem), so it's a moot point.

Or if by phone you mean some rendering task or a protein folding computation? Because otherwise it's just a bunch of apps suspended in RAM.

Exynos designs were always inferior GPU wise vs adreno... and there was nothing to be done about it...

Well... this will settle things down for RoW devices. The mobile gamer market is also big, they know what they do...

Crapnyos will no longer use custom cores, they closed that division down thank god, and hopefully no more Mali GPU, so high end ARM A78 cores and AMD GPU could be massive jump in performance and efficiency. Qualcomm aren’t GPU specialists, they should also tap AMD on the shoulder for GPU’s.

Yes, but mobile development targets(tile based rasterization) got booked by gpu specialists themselves, so no stone left unturned anyway.

A CPU can't be a bottleneck, right?

Not all apps are suspended in ram.

They buy amd mobole gpu division so they did not need to license the tech from other. They are not gpu specialist but among mobile maker they were among the decent one. And they don't need to win the gpu performance war. As long as phonemaker needs their baseband/modem it is unavoidable to get their "snapdragon package".
