Various online retailers have started taking pre-orders for new socket LGA1200 motherboards based on the Intel Z490 chipset. Prices of these motherboards appear on average 20-25% higher than older-generation Z390 motherboards at launch, and in many cases, pricier than even AMD X570 chipset ones. The cheapest Z490 motherboard on U.S. retailer Newegg is priced at $149. Mid-range boards such as the MSI Tomahawk, are priced around $190. The next segment begins bang at the $200-mark, including the Gigabyte AORUS Elite, MSI MPG Gaming Edge, and the ASRock Extreme4.

The next tier appears to be priced between $230-250, including the ASUS Prime-A, the cheapest ROG Strix-H, and the ASRock Phantom Gaming Velocita. A notch further up, around the $270-290, you'll find the MSI Gaming Pro Carbon, Gigabyte AORUS Pro, ASUS ROG Strix-F. The $290-350 band includes the ROG Strix-E, Gigabyte Vision-D, etc. The high-end segment begins at $390, with the ROG Maximus XII Hero, Gigabyte AORUS Master, MSI MPG ACE, etc. The priciest boards on offer are the ASRock AQUA at $1,099, and Gigabyte AORUS Xtreme Waterforce at $1,299. Newegg states that the boards will begin shipping from its warehouses on the 20th of May, 2020.

$749 for the MSI Z490 Godlike, wow

Maximus XII Extreme also $749? Does that make the Maximus XII Extreme Glacial (with custom waterblock) $999?

Formula Extreme and Apex seem to all have the same VRM power stages this time around - at least in quantity. Also, no video output for the top three boards.

DDR4 overclocking and bios will be improved slightly for the Apex. Gskill announcing Trident Z 5000Mhz kit between now and May 20? Apex 12 specific kit?

Rumor is the Apex 12 can run 5000Mhz XMP, but no kits yet validated, and we all know only a small percentage CML CPUs will be able to pull that off.

Just like 4800Mhz XMP and the last series.

Guessing $429 to $449 for the Apex 12. Wish it was EATX, oh well, maybe by Alder or Meteor Asus will finally make that 2-dimm SuperBoard I've always dreamed of.

Pretty sure the Apex is $399

it was listed on Newegg for like 5m with no image for that price I guess it could have been an error.

Here in Canada where get hosed (no pun intended) the cheapest boards are $229.99 for the As Rock Phantom Gaming 4. The highlights though are the ROG Maximus 11 for $1099 which is actually not bad notwithstanding the Asus tax. The Gigabyte waterforce is an eye watering $1949.99. There are a ton of boards in the $240 to $500 range though. Still too expensive though as the TRX40 Zenith Extreme is $100 more than the Maximus11 with way more than $100 of connectivity on the board itself.

The Apex is $580 Canadian.

Z490 Motherboards preorder at $149-169 for a pretty decent MSI gaming, and 10700KF will cost $350, not bad, well SATA port 5,6 and 2 will not work if M.2 is installed but still good enough.
where have you seen Z390 at $49-69 LOL. I want one to run 9900 ES.

I dont care about DDR4 much it will soon be replaced by DDR5, so why bother to run 1 single sided module at 5000. For what. LOL

im not talking about the bottom of the barrel.

For example, Z390 Aorus pro Wifi that I have was £196 when I bought it, the Z390 Aorus Pro AX is now £296, even more expensive than what Z390 Aorus Master was when it came out.

They removed it from the US site not sure why.

OH NO! Asus once again withholding Apex availability from the US? Last series - only one shipping container of Apex XI arrived in October coinciding with the 9900KS launch, availability was about 30days, never replenished.

Apex X boards only available for 6months October 2017 to April 2018 - then discontinued, why? Apex X boards selling for $699 on eBay. :kookoo:

Why don't they like us?

its not a board I would buy but I see its appeal. I would grab the Hero or Formula personally. Kinda bummed they got rid of the code it would fit in nicely at 449 lol

Hero always best bang for the buck of the ROG boards. :)

Although not too many 2-dimm boards available. Apex and EVGA Dark and a handful of ITX boards. If you really LOVE the FEEL of high-speed memory, there aren't many choices.

Yea, the Apex XII - definitely not the most aesthetic, if I could run 200Mhz less using any given (2) ddr4 modules on the Extreme or Formula - yea seriously thinking about moving back to an Asus Extreme board for Alder or Meteor, if it weren't for the price.

Love my M5E, and M8E, from 2012 and 2015. Maximus V Extreme was only $389. Mounted on my wall in the hallway, say hello to it every morning.

"Morning Maximus V, how's it hanging?"

------

(see the motherboard is hanging on the wall see, that's the joke) :ohwell:

So, since we now know that z490 boards "release" date is may 20th, which is the same day the embargo lifts on motherboard reviews, is it too much of a stretch for me to guess that the 10th gen cpus will also drop on the 20th? I believe I heard gamers nexus mention that the 20th is the embargo date for cpu reviews as well. Also does anyone have a reason to think the cpus will be a pre-order affair or midnight release or 9am possibly?

Echoing Buildzoid's thoughts from his recent Z490 video, preordering a Z490 motherboard seems silly for a multitude of reasons, especially since Intel has struggled with 14nm availability. Why pay hundreds of dollars up front for a motherboard when you may not be able to get your hands on a compatible CPU when they launch?
