the 60GB PS3 was 100% backwards compatible thanks to carrying a full PS2 inside, the software compatibility that was only about 70% compatible was used on the 80GB model.

Every one I've been into to repair and just tinker with has largely been the same related to the basics from the "A" to the "K" models a least.

The removal of the Emotion Engine Chip is about the largest change from the "A" and "B" models to the successor "C" and onward models, this did cause a major change in the board's layout for sure but from the "C"s onward it didn't change too much whenever it did aside from one that addressed the cooling issue(s).

One source from Reddit does describe it as "Almost" an entire PS2 inside but almost still comes up short of a full PS2 and all that was made into the MB of the console. It was also stated with that source it was compatable with MOST, not all PS2 games due to it having to function via emulation with the rest of the system and the fact there are a few PS2 games/disks that will not work with ANY PS3 period.

That's why I said it's not 100% backwards compatable and note some sources do state the number of games they do support is kinda limited. That may be right or wrong but it's what I've seen and as said, I do have at least one game that doesn't work with it.
Here's another reference: www.livewire.com Is PlayStation 3 Compatible With PS2?

Back to Xbox - Would be nice if they can make it work bug-free with older stuff since I do have a few on an original Xbox console here. That console was never used too much and still works fine to this day so TBH, based on that I've no real need to worry about it but still, would be nice anyway if I did get one.

Yeah, it's good for whoever is buying those boxes. Their consoles exclusives are none except a few like Halo (dead after 3 anyways, thank 343i), Gears of War and Forza. But M$ never puts any of their dedication on PC platform or gaming itself. Halo MCC is a crapshoot, I bought it for bugged trash even with H2A, all of them are having bugs and Gears of War, none on Steam platform (ignoring that trash cringe Gears5 whatever). And also their GaaS trash is a sad future for the gaming - Xbox Game Pass (Gaas + UWP DRM), Xbox game bar - Win10 bloatware, add forced WDDM updates to the WaaS - Windows as a Service disaster. And even the Steam MCC Halo, again Xbox Live, just a new reskin of WSL in a new way. Gorget GOG releases, even Bethesda releases their top games on GOG DRM Free.

1000s of games, yeah No, Gaming and it's philosophy is dead at M$. It's all about money, agenda and other crap. Not even excited except for the fact that new games (the ones which are not politically correct) will use Mesh Shading finally which has been in PC GPUs since 2 years, at-least on Nvidia and good utilization of more fast CPU cores (since a long time) and etc.

Well it is the same x86 based hardware.. hardly ground breaking, nice to see MS being kind though.

Only real thing I can see is with the new console you'd have to sign up for an MS account to use the system as it is with more recent consoles like the Xbox One I have.
It's just a way to get more on the MS bandwagon.

I don't think it is an odd use case. Considering that if you get a PS5 or Xbox Series X, there may be games in the previous gen consoles that you would like to play/ replay. That also means you don't need to retain the old console to play these games.

We PAL users didn't have PS2 hardware on our PS3 60GB; it was done via emulator. The real backwards compatibility was only NTSC users' treat. :(

Better just have both PS2 & PS3 on my shelf. :D
Well we had the GS GPU from ps2 in 60GB Australian models, just not the emotion engine CPU that was in US models (PAL and NTSC are now defunct due to HD resolutions, only difference that still remains is old NTSC regions still use native 60hz input and PAL regions still use 50hz because of power grid specifications, ie, 240v/50hz vs 120v/60hz)
Later they even removed the GS GPU and went to pure emulation for ps2 classics which CFW later unlocked with hit and miss results.

You got it too.

I still love the old games ‍
I'm 43, I have great memories that I like to relive every now and then.
It's convenient to have a single console plugged in that can play all gens so i dont have a crowded tv, continuously disconnecting and reconnecting consoles.
Not a hard concept to grasp.

Pretty nice. It would be interesting to know if they are just going to left just as emulation or add some features to enhance the games visually or fps if possible, that would be awesome.

Out of the thousands of games there will be ZERO "Guitar Hero" games...not even with USB controllers....sigh
