Intel is discontinuing the special dodecahedron LDPE retail packaging for its previous-generation flagship desktop processor, the Core i9-9900K. The processor itself is still an active SKU, but its retail packaging will likely now revert to a more conventional-looking paperboard cuboid package, resembling that of the Core i9-9900KF. There is no mention of any change to the "limited edition" Core i9-9900KS. The product change notification (PCN) may have been triggered by the i9-9900K getting succeeded by the 10-core i9-10900K processor that ships in a simpler (though still premium-looking) hard paperboard package with a large front-face window; and the fact that the dodecahedron LDPE package presented logistics problems for distributors, as crates of these processors could pack fewer units than with smaller cuboid boxes, and needed additional styrofoam cushioning to prevent transit damage.

More profit for Intel

Who in their right mind would ever name their child Dodeca?

I'd get the chip just for the box just to have the box; I'd sell the chip as a tray or something. 7700K was my last Skylake and no more of those here.

The box is hella cool.

Meh, I felt the packaging was a waste in the first place.

Its pretty neat overall, but the cardboard that wraps around the plastic clamshell doesn't really stay put once the tape seal is broken, sadly.

It would be just cool on my shelf with all those motherboard boxes :)

You can buy the i9 box off eBay, most sellers are $15-20 USD, iirc.

That's what I'm gonna do :)

It actually would be a neat little display. Provided the Core i9 branding isn't printed directly on to the plastic. I can think of several cool little art projects to make with the box :D

For the irony, I'd probably put an old Athlon in that box. :)

I'd probably make a pencil/pen holder out of it

Wasnt there a casemod with this box?

I never bought a 9900K but honestly, if it was Intel's reaction to AMD's threadripper packaging then shame on them both.

I've built precisely 32 threadripper machines (four stacks of eight) and the ludicrious amount of waste packaging generated by the premium X399 boards and Threadripper boxes made me shed a tear for the environment. It was all so utterly wasteful and outside of collector's editions there's no goddamn point in any of it.

Everyone that actually buying 9900K just for the box may raise your hand now.

The branding isn't, it is a clear plastic box. The branding is on a cardboard sectional that wraps around it and is secured with the tape seal.
