Samsung Optimizes New QLED TVs For Gaming

Samsung is introducing a slew of new features for its recent QLED TV sets to create "more immersive and responsive gaming sessions". Samsung is bringing adaptive sync and HDMI 2.1 to its latest QLED sets which will bring significant gaming improvements when paired with a high-end PC or next-generation console. HDMI 2.1 enables 4K 120Hz support with next-generation graphics cards and consoles, along with FreeSync Premium to benefit existing systems with stuttering and tearing reductions. Samsung is also advertising low input lag of 9.8 ms, automatic game mode with motion blur minimization, Dynamic Black EQ to improve object clarity in dark scenes, and Multi-View PiP capability.

Do you have the model numbers for these tv's? because the 2020 samsung models do not have HDMI 2.1, or like the 55" and bigger up do or something shady like that, but the smaller 2020 QLED does not, they released them two months ago, Amazon reviews for the Samsung 2020 model QLED and non-QLED for that matter have terrible reviews. Apparently Samsung cheaped out on a bunch of stuff for this refresh.

also i believe the 49" and under 2020 models dont have native 120hz, only the high end models. and is the qled 60, 70, 80, or 90 series that have native 120hz at 4k? see samsungs own specifications product page doesn't specify, about a month ago i chatted with their customer support and they didn't know either. so yeah. its all a crap show at the moment.

@Uskompuf if you have any clarification as to which model numbers have native 120hz 4k and not trumotion rate 120, it would be greatly appreciated

As someone who deals directly with Samsung, getting the stock to the stores. I've noticed that the 2020 range are several hundred $$ cheaper than last years models, when comparing invoices.

Strange why the phones shoot up in price with new features, yet the TVs loose features and quality....the price stagnates.

I find it very confusing too, I was trying to buy a HDMI 2.1 4k 120hz freesync tv ( for $600 or less ) in preparation for playstation 5... sadly I don't see it happening. I am hoping teh TLC refresh (even though not QLED) TCL or w.e its called brand 2020 tv's later this Fall and Vizio's line, maybe I will still get lucky in the specs and price I desire. Samsung is unable to deliver though, I was ready to buy as soon as I read there 2020 models hit Best Buy stores a month ago though, but I am glad I did more research

Maybe the time to upgrade my 32'' Samsung TV is closing. Every decent PC monitor out there is usually curved and I do NOT want a curved PC monitor.

There are two great non-curved gaming monitors. The LG GL850 is the best one imo, with the fastest response, and highest chance of quality out of the box. The Asus VG27AQ is also a good cheaper choice, as long as you're willing to play the panel lottery (make sure returns are easy in case you get bad pixels etc.) a bit just in case you get a bad one. It's like a half price PG279Q.

Q90R also supports hdmi 2.1 with an updated (free) oneconnect box, just like q900R and q950R if you can find a good deal.

I think the Vizio Quantum line refresh in August this year will save the day. I hope so anyway. Competition is a great thing.

I was about to get a LG C9 55" OLED TV (currently at 1300€ in Spain) but I'm going to wait for the new ones with HDMI 2.1 for those juicy 120hz at 4K. I'm still playing with a Sharp Aquos LCD TV 47" from 2009 @1080p 60Hz, a good TV for the time but since I upgraded my PC about a month ago, now I'm quite sure that need to go up in resolution and have a more fluid image overall (more hz and no tearing with G-Sync and that kind of stuff).

Good to see that prices are not going to be that high since the tech can be called "standard" now (like OLED displays). I saw a C9 and fell in love with it.

PS: Yeah I'm one of those that like to play with big screens for different type of situations (racing and flight simulators, playing with a controller from my bed at certain games, etc), can't stand the size of monitors just because of that.

what the hell are you talking about? other than 21:9 monitors, the VAST MAJORITY of monitors are not curved. hell most of the ones that are curved are VA panels or lower end crap.

My Vizio 4K TV died after like 3 years. I defiantly won't be getting another Vizio in a hurry. This specs on this look pretty solid from Samsung just wonder if it'll have AI upscale from 4K to 8K or not as well or even AI up scale to like 6K that would be sufficient and the icing on the cake. Price and proper reviewing is obviously a factor as well, but the specs mentioned are certainly something to look at. I wonder if we'll see any HDMI 2.1 TV's that are like 1440p and in the ball park of like 192Hz-240Hz that would be quite sufficient to me especially if it had lower input lag and was closer to 36" in size and curved.

i believe all q series are native 120 with tru motion 240. mine is 55" q60 and its native 120

I am not going to do your shopping for you but look for an IPS as pretty much every one of those in 16:9 will be flat.

I am using the CX 48" OLED right now as my monitor and let me tell you it is NOT the holy grail of displays. eARC is completely screwed on this TV. Audio is out of sync even when watching the built-in apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime. The picture is always 1 sec ahead of the sound.

I have my PC hooked up to HDMI socket 1 and my Denon AV Receiver hooked up to HDMI socket 2 (eARC). When i select 5.1 or 7.1 audio in Windows 10, every time i open a webpage that has videos on it, i hear a couple of clicks over my speakers as if the TV is constantly switching the audio signal on and off to save power or something. If i select Dolby Atmos for Home Theater in Windows 10, when i play an Atmos movie it will only work some of the time. Audio will either play nice or sound completely scratchy in this mode. The only audio mode that works properly is Stereo 2.0 but that defeats the point of what eARC is meant to be used for and i have a 5.1.2 surround sound setup.

Then lets get to the image quality of the TV. It's running in 4K 120hz so it is nice and smooth - no ghosting. It manages to do this over HDMI 2.0 but with chroma subsampling (8-bit, limited colour, 4:2:0). But... the screen itself is so damn glossy that it is literally reflecting EVERYTHING in my room. And i use blackout curtains - i can still see reflections of myself and the room every time there's a dark scene. LG should not be claiming to have true blacks when every time it gets dark, the TV turns itself into a mirror. And if you're in a light room, the reflective glare it produces is likely to give you a headache.

Another caveat is that the UK version does not come with any On Demand Apps such as BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, 4oD or My5. LG has failed to secure a contract with those vendors so the apps aren't even in the LG content store to download and add-in. They've also removed the built-in DTS audio decoder that the C9 came with. You're stuck with Dolby Digital or Atmos only for surround sound decoders.

It seems LG has also cheaped out on parts just like Samsung have with their 2020 QLED TV's. And as some people may have heard on the forums, the LG CX OLED's don't have full 48Gbps bandwidth on their HDMI 2.1 sockets. It's capped at 40Gbps instead. That is not so much a problem mind you coz you'd only need the full 48Gbps bandwidth to do 12-bit colour @ 4:4:4. The CX OLED's only have a 10-bit panel so they wouldn't be able to utilize that extra 8Gbps of bandwidth anyhow.

Either way, I've arranged for the store to come and collect my 48" CX OLED and have it refunded. I can't accept screwy audio and missing features on a TV i just paid £1500 for. So... back to the drawing board

I'm hoping this update comes to the 2019 QLEDs too. Samsung has been saying that they can update the firmware to allow features from HDMI 2.1 on their existing HDMI 2.0 sets, but can't enable all features at the same time on some. Some people want eARC others want HDMI Forum VRR (would also make it compatible with Nvidia's HDMI Gsync). I purchased a Q80R last year and I expect it will get an update to support those features on at least one of the HDMI ports, but wont be mad if it doesn't. I don't know why people threaten to dump Samsung if the dont add these features, they never advertised the TVs as having those particular features when purchased. That said, this advertisement still only lists Freesync, so i'm keeping my expectations low.
