Now let's see what the XBox pricing will be.

Who knows, maybe Microsoft will decide to make the console OS accessible, it's running windows anyway...

Something tells me both Sony and Microsoft have been waiting on the hair trigger, to determine how the other will price their console accordingly. That being said, how will Microsoft respond to this?

Even if 499€ = $499 other region, that still one hell of bargain.

Great point, totally slipped my (and by the looks everyone's) mind.
note, not me... which is my bluray/ uhd library is strong. Why buy digital when I can get the disk that usually comes with a digital code? With digital anything, you're gonna need an internet connection and prayer if that company hosting goes under. I love my physical media.

If this turns out to be true, it's cheaper than I expected, especially the difference between versions. I expected it to be 50€. I'm psyched.

Why buy digital when I can get the disk that usually comes with a digital code?
For me personally it's clutter. I can't even imagine how much space it would take to have physical versions of all my games. And I don't even have a particularly large one.

I still cannot understand why microsoft doesn't push for windows 10 on the new xbox. They tried to create the same ecosystem and share online games etc but they stopped at that. They could easily support it with an up that skins it like xbox and it would sell insanely more than what they are selling now. Are the hardware still that proprietary?

That's the big difference. A PC you own (more or less). A console you only rent.
It's not that you're getting screwed, it's just that both distribution and support for consoles is much, much cheaper.

You can almost guarantee that they both will be selling consoles at loss. The big money comes from subscriptions anyway.

Just €399? Awesome pricing. It's basically Ryzen 7 3700x (€290) + RX 5700XT (€380) + 1TB NVMe SSD (€150) + 16GB GDDR6 RAM (around €100) = 920€
Add MB/PSU/Case/ and you're in €1.2K price territory.
My God, we PC gamers are getting so screwed :(
Yeah, but you'll be stuck with such config for ~5 years, which will become dog shit by PC standards by that time. Plus there is no versatility for tinkering with the console or games; also no support for any other format than 16:9. So you get what you pay for. Consider that you paid premium for such performance 2-1 years ago.

Would this translate into $500/$400 for the US?
Conversion rates aren’t quite the same, but with the various tariffs it sounds pretty close. Not bad at all, really. Even $450 isn’t bad, I think that’s close to where the PS4 Pro started.
I'd rather buy used games and save much more than $100.
The thing is, the Playstation Store is just like Steam, where you can get older games for much less, and often there’s another discount for PS+ members. I think I’ve paid $20 or less for many games, digitally. Even newer games will get a discount on certain weekends if you can be patient.

Used games market's given the notice, then? Funny, it wasn't that long since Sony was flaunting this as a selling point...

My God, we PC gamers are getting so screwed :(
It has been at least three (and a half) generations of releases that this record has been played at. IMvHO, the only time PC gamers were screwed was back during the PS3/X360 era; horrible console ports that looked bad and performed poorly all over.
As for the price, consoles have always been cheaper to own around launch, nothing new here. A couple of years and gaps will start to shrink, as always.

I had to correct my post above, I HAVE gotten many games for under $20. Usually any Tomb Raider or other SP game I will wait out until it’s at least under $40. It has to be REALLY good or MP for me to pay anywhere close to full price.

In this case, Sony and MS have adopted the “PC way” of digital storefronts. You can get most any title, and there are flash sales and discounts randomly. You can often get the game digitally for prices similar to just getting a used disc. It’s probably the digital price that helps set the disc price on eBay and Gamestop.

Sadly, the disc copies of many games are almost worthless, at least right out of the box. Seems like most any game is greeted with GBs of patches as soon as you insert the disc. Maybe that would be a good article to write—using a modern console with no internet connection and only game discs. Is it even possible? It was on last gen, but I think we’ve slowly moved away from those days with XBoxOne and PS4.

Since the xbox one, they have been using the same core as the current windows. First 8, then 10 when it came out. The direct storage API of the xsx is planned to get released on classic windows as well.

Using classic windows on the xsx would ruin the whole point of them making a console, since that would mean that steam epic game store etc would be available and they would barely make any profit (if any at all). You would also lose all the optimisations it's getting for being a console, and you would get people getting angry because x software doesn't like the exotic memory configuration of the xsx where the cpu can only use 3.5 GB, and the latency being higher than ddr.

From the moment that you slap mainline windows on a product, people are expecting it to do everything that classic windows can do, if it's limited in any kind of way *cough* windows RT *Cough*, it sucks, and the pitchforks are out.

No one is getting screwed (or everyone is depending on how you look at it). You're oversimplifying things, for one thing every one of those components comes from a different manufacture and they each need margins, the PS5 is one unit from Sony so their margins are going to be lower, plus all of their components are highly integrated which means the cost is smaller.

But more importantly is that no matter how you put it, that PC is a way more capable machine than any consoles will ever be. The costs are well justified for both.

Something tells me both Sony and Microsoft have been waiting on the hair trigger, to determine how the other will price their console accordingly. That being said, how will Microsoft respond to this?

You can be sure of the fact that they know each other's pricing ages before we will.

I understand all that and I'm willing to pay a premium to have "PC freedom of choice". With that being said, pricing of retail PC parts has become just ridiculous. I remember times when we used to pay $400-500 for the best gaming GPUs on the market and look where we're at now, $1.2K and price hikes probably won't stop here. Meanwhile profit margins of AMD/Intel/NVidia keep going up and up and up. I truly believe this can kill DIY gaming PC market if it continues because consoles and even streaming solutions are becoming very viable-cheaper alternatives especially now in economic meltdown.
Yeah, well, I see your point. But those $500 you (and I) remember, would be like $700 in today's money due to the inflation alone. So we're not getting as screwed as you think. (At the same time, yes, I also hope we never see another Turing pricing again.)
CPUs however are looking pretty good. $200 bought you a mainstrem CPU that could handle anything you threw at it 15 years ago, it continues to do so today.

I guess it makes sense, i wouldn't buy a console anymore, the moment i realized what a PC can do, so to me it made more sense but you are right, they still have a huge audience and games are super expensive these days so they (probably) make lots of money.

Sony has been more aggressive on console pricing since the PS3 fiasco. I think they know that once you exceed a certain price consumers balk. MS proved that with XboxOne—they thought that Kinect could allow for a $500 launch price, and they were wrong.

Hmmm, so 499 Euro to AU, straight conversion is about $817 AUD. Add onto that the typical Australia tax and we'll be paying near 1K, as I expected.

The cpu is x86, but the whole platform is still tailor made for sony/microsoft. Seeing how the specs are slightly different for both consoles, I wouldn't be surprised to know that AMD shared a huge chunck of the SoC R&D with them, vanilla Ryzen doesn't work with a GDDR memory configuration. Same arch, but the behavior of the system isn't the same, it's optimized for gaming.

The bussiness model is also just so different. The cpu/gpu that you are buying off the shelves got the R&D and marketing included in the price. Meanwhile game consoles are often being sold at a loss. Yhea you are buying hardware, but there's a shitload of software that comes with it, and that's where a big part of their money is coming from. When you buy a cpu/gpu from AMD/Intel/Nvidia, you don't have to pay for any of the services that they are going to provide you. The money that you gave them then, is the only money that they will see from you until your next uppgrade.

They did at least for the GPU division. RDNA 2 is tailor-made for consoles because Sony and Microsoft didn't want to pay the Nvidia tax for their technology. Even TESLA with Elon Musk got pissed off that Nvidia was trying to screw him over.

Don't worry about it, we still have to add ~20% tax here as well ;)
And it gets better when you realize you don't need just the console package, you'll have to buy some extras as well :D

So you're saying we shouldn't buy RDNA2 for PC, because it's not made for that. Will keep that in mind.
Even TESLA with Elon Musk got pissed off that Nvidia was trying to screw him over.
Tesla didn't get pissed at anyone. They hired Jim Keller to make them a custom chip. It was all out in the open.
Some friends that had contact with the domain tell the self-driving chips are usually a problem because they suck hundreds of watts to operate. That just won't fly on an electric car. It's more likely Nvidia couldn't/wouldn't hit power draw requirements that drew Tesla to come up with a custom solution.

If you hook up a mouse and keyboard to ps4/5 and Xbox etc you can use the browser to do mundane PC tasks like excel and word or the alternatives, discord and many other things... You can file your taxes online and yes the keyboard and mouse works and is allowed for gaming on consoles... These are the things most of us don't understand or choose not to believe lol

If you like multitasking and hardware freedom then cool PCMR

You can file your taxes online and yes the keyboard and mouse works and is allowed for gaming on consoles... These are the things most of us don't understand or choose not to believe lol

If you like multitasking and hardware freedom then cool PCMR
Really? I can run Firefox on PlayStation? Cool!

Conversion rates aren’t quite the same, but with the various tariffs it sounds pretty close. Not bad at all, really. Even $450 isn’t bad, I think that’s close to where the PS4 Pro started.

The thing is, the Playstation Store is just like Steam, where you can get older games for much less, and often there’s another discount for PS+ members. I think I’ve paid $20 or less for many games, digitally. Even newer games will get a discount on certain weekends if you can be patient.
Lol
Sure.

Meanwhile I can buy destiny on disc with all expansions for $20 pretty much anywhere its still available. But if I want it digitally (which I did) it was $60 bucks.

Digital is not the deal maker people tend to think it is and physical games tend to go on sale more regularly and drop significantly in price as they age. Digital isn't guaranteed to do either. Then there's the fact that you have an entire 3rd party market to buy AND sell your games on your own.

Digital only is a terrible idea until digital IS ACTUALLY CHEAPER than physical across the board (used sales would really seal it as the only option you need) but I don't see that happening... Well... Ever.
