Samsung's upcoming flagship client-segment M.2 NVMe SSD, the 980 PRO, has cleared Korean regulators. The drive comes in three capacity variants, led by a 1 TB model (model: MZ-V8P1T0), a 500 GB model (MZ-V8P500), and a 250 GB model (MZ-V8P250). The maximum capacity being rather low at 1 TB suggests that Samsung could stick with MLC (2 bits per cell) NAND flash for the 980 PRO, coupled with an in-house controller that takes advantage of PCI-Express 4.0 x4 host interface to offer sequential transfer rates of up to 6,500 MB/s reads, with up to 5,000 MB/s writes and high random access throughput on account of the MLC NAND flash setup. For higher capacities from Samsung, one should look out for successors of the 970 EVO Plus, which could use 3D TLC NAND flash combined with a similar controller to the 980 PRO, although there's no word on when that drive would launch. The 980 PRO is expected to launch before October.

Why did they even bother making the 256GB variant. 500GB, 1TB and 2TB would be perfect. Guess that's reserved for the 980 EVO though

Because not everyone has a huge pron stash.
256GB is ample for the average home user.

The average home user wouldn't make use of this drive. This drive is made for content creators, enthusiasts, etc anyway. 500GB should be the standard these days imho. 256GB goes quick after formatted, OS, a few big programmes and or a game. Full.

Samsung, stop messing around with 256gb. Start crafting those 8 TB nvme's to bring some competition.

256gb drives start to feel like floppy disks in respect to recent launches.

Its funny how people confuse memory bandwidth with speed, when it's the latency that makes the data go fast not the bandwidth... and ssd are A LOT slower specially the none octane ones.

DDR4 3200 is 25.6 GB/s that's x4 times faster than the read speed of the 980Pro ....... not even close !

Have you used ramdisk? If yes then you would have understood what I said.

The problem is latency, only Optane comes close to memory I guess that's why it costs a leg.

Well lets say is closer than ever before and that is good enough to have a ssd to act as a ram for some apps.

You should probably check your facts... 6.5GB/sec is DDR2-800 speeds.

At least is closer than ever before and that was my point.

Well im sorry i have used RAMDisk and i still don't understand what you are trying to say .......

A reminder of what you said in case you forgot :
DDR4 memory speeds in a ssd

RAMDisk is nothing more than RAM acting as caching for your storage which can be , HDD , Sata SDD etc etc ........ in other words totally unrelated to the statement you made !

Some parts of the US, you can make $400-600 per month giving plasma, twice per week, 4 weeks per month.

With Optane yes, it has been for some time now, but not with other SSDs. Again that's the reason they cost so much, they are in the middle between normal SSDs and Ram.

Sounds about right. Windows should be taking about ~ 23GB. Throw in Office and Photoshop which is relatively small / medium sized programs for a few gigs each. 28GB doesn't leave any space for modern games at all. CoD MW alone is 191GB (extreme example, I admit).

If you don't play any games I guess that's fine. Also the 75% rule makes the 60GB drive a 43.9GB drive before performance slowdowns.

While I agree with you, those drives are very expensive, you can get a 256gb for much less.

Wow, where at
usually at the donation center they only give you cookies, you would need to go to plasma centers that sell plasma to other medical places, they are the ones that pay.
