Discord Is Rebranding To Appeal to a Wider Non-Gaming Audience

Discord has recently announced that they will be rebranding with a new "Your Place to Talk" campaign as they work towards making the platform more inclusive to non-gaming fans. Discord has overhauled their landing page to emphasize the platforms various uses such as for "school clubs, gaming groups, or the worldwide art community", the landing page now also prominently features the "Your Place to Talk" slogan throughout.

Specific changes to the Discord platform include the streamlining of user sign up, the introduction of server video support, server creation simplification with templates, and a 200% increase in overall voice/video capacity. Discord is also planning to make the "jokes and references within the app less gaming-specific" which may upset some. The recently launched Discord Safety Center forms a vital part of this transformation helping improve transparency and reduce misuse.

Took them long enough. The whole aesthetic and tone of the app has been, and I don't use this word often because it's massively overused, cringe. The whole "wumpus" thing on startup with a generic gamer-reference was awful, the fact that it says "oopsie" when it crashes, it just comes off incredibly immature and unprofessional. Staff has the same sort of tone. There's a reason why there's a certain crowd of people that use Discord heavily. Hopefully they can move away from that crap now and actually appeal to a wider audience, because objectively they're the best hangout/voice call application available.

I like to game and I absolutely hate discord - but I'm and odd duck and I hate pretty much anything social media related. I've tried discord a handful of times and even joined a few groups for things that interest me or that I frequent online, but for some reason it rubs me the wrong way and I hate using it.

I'm not sure there's a thing they could do for my awkward self to get me to like it and use it. Guess I'm a lost cause.

Its like Ventrillo or Teamspeak but on steroids and free so you dont need to pay to have voice servers.

Its infinitely better than those, its amazing what content creators have done with their discord. Game testers I know are using it to "team up" and coordinate alpha stage bug reports. Sure they could use m$ Teams for that but thats over complicating things for that usage.

its so easy to jump between discord channels, that makes easy enough that you can swap voice chats without having to know IP addresses or passwords.

I'll never go back to those or even Mumble. I had my own discord channel at one time, they just make too damn easy now.

No, not a PM system. I mean the ability to reply to a specific post and have it show as a sub post like Twitter, Facebook or Slack.
