Amazon Studios has licensed the rights to the Fallout game series from Bethesda Game Studios and plans to create a new TV series with acclaimed producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy's Kilter Films attached to produce the project. Amazon Studios has committed to develop the entire techno-thriller drama series which is currently in pre-production. Kilter Films also produces HBO's Westworld which has been well received and was recently picked up for a fourth season.

Kilter Films said:
Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time. Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we're incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios.

Oh god please no. This is old even before the first pilot.

Its BEEN DONE BEFORE guys. Wake up. 40% of all movies has post apocalyptic theming these days.

Also, there will be bugs. You can rest assured the film will just bluescreen on you at some point.

Oh no. Another universe castrated for the average consumer. After the abomination that was the movie version of "Ender's game" I basically stopped watching movies altogether. They always end up being nothing more than a dumbed down version of source material. It seems to be even worse with series.

Probably got tied up in legal issues regarding movie rights between Bungie. & Microsoft.

If the series is anything like the Fallout 76, I guess we'll just have Bear Grylls on the screen showing you how barren the Fallout world has become because there are no other people alive, you have to learn how to survive on your own.

He'll have the first person perspective using a GoPro as he traverses the terrain, climbs crevasses and builds a shelter. He'll also have a handheld camera to get those shots of him as he holds the camera at arm's length, just up above his head as he explains what he's doing and why. He'll then show you the best way to combat a mole rat, what parts are best for eating, how to store some food for later so it all doesn't go to waste and how to use utilize other parts of the rat's body for personal protection.

Actually the Lord of The Rings is pretty spot on for me and the MCU has certainly got the spirit right in terms of the characters and themes of it's offerings. As for series The Mandalorian is better than any Star Wars book I ever read hell even Game of Thrones is just as good as the source material.

Lord of the Rings movies were really good as movies, but fell short of the books as far as storytelling goes. Marvel and Star Wars are just action without much depth - with Star Wars being action movies from the beginning and comic books being limited by their form, there's not much source material to talk about. Game of Thrones is just, well, weak fantasy riding on sex, gore and being "edgy". The books were better, but can't really be considered important or even memorable in their genre. Fallout, on the other hand, has thousands of hours worth of lore and a well established world with development going back to 1988, so it would be quite hard for some celebrities who, most probably, know nothing of this lore and just want to cash in on the post-apocalyptic fad, to create something worthwhile.
But, in the end, if it means more money for Bethesda, at least something good might come from it.

The books Really? The first book (Lord of the Rings) is some of the most boring 100 pages of any fantasy series I have read. Wait until Amazon does Numenor(Silmirallion). If you think Fallout is deeper than Star Wars you would be wrong. Game of Thrones is indeed all the things you described but for me a believable dragon burning wights is pretty high fantasy. In fact you cannot give an opinion on Game of Thrones as you never watched it all. Fallout as a game has also been hit and miss no matter how strongly it waxes nostalgic to our youth.

And there is about 200+ billion dollars of revenue that disagrees with you. I forgot to comment on Marvel. Marvel movies are much more nuanced than first glance. When you watched (If you watched) Infinity War the interaction between Tony Stark and Bruce Banner near the beginning is priceless. If you think that Comic books are limited by their form I offer The Phoenix Saga and Avengers Annual 10.

I’ve never been bored by the LoTR book series. I first read them in the 5th grade in 1977 and was hooked. I’ve read them three times total now. Frankly, as entertaining as the movies are, I don’t know how any one can watch them without being thoroughly confused, with so much left out. I consider the books crucial. They are so well written, creating an entire world in my imagination so that as I read it was JUST like a movie, and began my lifelong love of the fantasy genre.

GoT is a little closer to the books but only because they had Martin so closely involved with the series. Still alot of background is left out. And on top of all that , we still don’t have the last darn book because he’s been so self absorbed in the series. It’s like he is unaware how old he is and that he might be leaving us with an unfinished story.

Mixed feelings here.

For those citing Spielberg and even Kubrik, both of these people are famous for taking the source material and twisting it pretty substantially. Jurassic Park seemed to despise character deaths from the source, and The Shining was remade as a mini-series because the author hated the divergence so much. That said, both of the films stand on their own. This makes the divergence something that can be overlooked.

Regarding the Lord of the Rings....it was less about following the books to the letter and more about structuring them into three movies with decent pacing. Not absolutely accurate to the books, it cut out sections which were deemed less than necessary, and resorted some of the events to create action. As such, it was not divergent from the books but definitely not faithful.

On the other hand, we got movies like Harry Potter. Fantastically book loyal, if somewhat curtailed to fit running time.

What exists in the Fallout Universe? Well, you could use the immensely dark nature of 1 and 2 to make something like The Walking Dead with some comedy. You could use the BoS games to make a story about wanderers trying to reclaim the wastes. You could also create something like 3 and 4 that retcon their own timeline, are janky as all get out, and simply conform to whatever is popular at the time with absolutely no consistency. Personally, I'm hoping for something like New Vegas, where the factions drive the story and you get the dark humor of the setting through actually developed characters trying to live in a alternative retro-future wasteland.

This said, I've watched The Loop and Upload on Amazon. If those are indicative of the quality which we'll be getting I'm betting on a CGI Mr. Handy being the wise cracking sidekick in a world where the lulls in action will be filled with nudity and drugs rather than wit. Being proven wrong would be great, but then Bethesda is licensing this out. They sued Mojang over using the word Scrolls as a title, so who knows if they'll do anything but authorize 30 minute advertisements to go buy Fallout 4 and 76.
