Mindshunter Announces Zephyr Gaming Mouse With a Built-in Cooling Fan

Mindshunter has made available ordering for its upcoming Zephyr mouse - a PC peripheral rodent that features a built-in cooling fan to, quote, "prevent sweaty palms". The Zephyr weighs just 68 g on account of its palm rest being highly perforated, which not only allows air from its built-in fan to cool your hands, but also reduces the mouse's weight (Mindshunters says its geometric design doesn't compromise rigidity or durability of the palm rest).






The Zephyr's call to fame is an angled RGB fan that sits inside the mouse's housing, which has three set speeds and an off position so you can adapt to thermal conditions on your environment. The Zephyr employs a PixArt 3389 sensor, with a maximum 16,000 DPI resolution that's tunable in 100 DPI increments. Omron switches with 50 million clicks of durability are also employed. It remains to be seen how does the operating fan affect the mouse's precision and control on your hands, and if the mouse registers any movement whilst idle and with only the fans spinning. The Zephyr is now available at a Super Early bird promotional pricing of $79 with a 50% off promotion, which places the mouse in the $160 territory for full pricing.

Looks interesting - I'm curious to how loud that little fan will be. Right now with my case and only having 3 fans in it (not counting the GPU) - 2 for push config on my H100i rad and the single 200mm top exhaust my tower is pretty quiet. It would be a sad, sad day if I had this mouse and the fan in it was louder than my tower.

It would be a sad, sad day if I had this mouse and the fan in it was louder than my tower.

The image above shows a gauge ranging from 4,000 to 10,000 RPM with the needle on 7,000. Unless Mindshunter has some serious Noctua-level fan in this mouse, I can't imagine it'll be very quiet at 7,000 RPM

Reverse the fan so you either have a hover mouse that clears dust in it's path, or it sucks on to your palm like a Leech.

They had better be using a very high quality fan in these, as that will likely be the common failure point, even if users are cleaning them as they should be (but probably won't).

That should be a benchmark competition whoever can find the loudest and smallest north bridge fan. I would actually be intrigued at the quietest and highest static pressure one though for a small fan that you could mount on a NB or on the base of a heat pipe tower cooler because that gap is usually plenty big enough to fit one, but those fans are normally god awful loud and also woefully ineffective relative to sound output.

Hover mouse actually sounds amazing. Kinda mixing the intuitiveness of an analog stick with the range and precision of a mouse. It would need to actually be as futuristic as it looks, though. Like, not just a lateral yaw radius, but pitch and roll too. So many possibilities... that's next-level. And I bet the first ones would be a total nightmare to actually use. But hey, you could like... poke things and swing swords around!

I think all it really needs to do in this day and age is hover and pulse crazy lights slowly. You can set it on top of one of those Asus routers with all of the obelisks on it and just let it float there.

That actually makes me think... why not make a mousepad with fans built in? Something like an external laptop cooler, but quieter and with a superfine membrane-type mesh on it, so the mouse works over the holes. Can make that pretty tricked out, maybe try putting addressable LEDs in it. Make it look like an evil crystal alien death match fighting ring. The mesh could even be washable.

About time... Had one of these before as a kid, but the entire world decided to stop making them entirely. Still has too few buttons for my macros, but hope it starts a trend like the Glorious mouse did.

I have to say, even though I don't use a mouse much for gaming, I use it for everything else PC related, and I suffer from sweaty hands, particularly in the summer, and this seems like a neat little idea. I do wonder about the longevity of that poor little fan though. I would think it would be possible to replace though?

Possible? Definitely. Will they sell you a replacement fan or whole new mouse is the question.

The mouspad idea isn't a terrible idea kind of laptop cooler based mouse pad with a mesh surface and with a stretchable breathable and washable top layer.
