A sealed copy of the original Super Mario Bros. has sold at auction for $114,000 making it the most expensive video game ever sold. The record had previously been held by the same NES game which sold for $100,150 early last year. This version of the game dates back to mid-1987 and still features the original cardboard hang tab underneath the shrink wrap. This makes it one of the few remaining early copies in such a pristine condition with a high Wata Games certified rating of 9.4/10. This was the highest-quality version of the game ever sold by the company, where previously lower quality versions of the game such as a 8.0/10 selling for $40,200.

Now we better start buying legendary games like Crysis 3, The witcher 3, GoW etc then sealed them tighly for 30 years.
Who knows these games could sold for $100k+ in 2040.

I read about a guy who's most steady income is spending around $10k/year on LEGO kits and selling them 10+ years later for around $30-40k/year.

People who buy these for this kind price have more money than sense.
Not if you sell it for a profit, that is a part of collecting things.

Super Mario Bros. was the first game i ever played, it was so alien to me like magic. It was a friends birthday just after the '89 Revolution in my country and i still had black and white TV. He had a color TV and an NES bought by his parents from West Germany.
My only "regret" is that i never finished it, i always died at the final boss fight, damned lizard :p

Fuck, seeing the back of the box actually made me a bit teary-eyed. Who's with me when I say as a kid, getting a new NES/SNES/Genesis game was...the...shiiiit! I used to get a lot of the games at Toys R Us and back then, they had a ticket system. You took the ticket up to the register, and then the cashier would get the game for you (I remember the anticipation lol) and then you would pay for it -- or more likely, your parents would. I can remember when my dad surprised me with the original Ocarina of Time while we were on our way home (he picked me up from school that day), I just read what was on the box and stared at it all the way home. And then when I fired it up at home, I can vividly remember being in awe of the title screen. Like, Damn, it's Linky! On a horse! In 3D!

I've never felt the same way since. Though, playing Metroid Prime for the first time comes close...

What happened to gaming?

Sort of. I still have some anger/rage when I see the Terminator 2 or Crash Dummies cartridge for NES. And its funny that both were on AVGN too. Now if you say Final Fantasy 1 for NES or Super Castlevania for SNES? Yes.

My sister took our NES and my parents gave away my Atari 7500, Sega Saturn, N64, Dreamcast, Sony PS1, Gamecube, 1 xbox and PS2 and their games to goodwill when they moved from BC.

It brought a tear to my eye when I found out.

I'll give you $50 CAD and you will have my forever love. ;)

If I were still on talking terms with my older brother (his choice to avoid the family) I'd be happy to remind that stupid ass what a fucking retard he was back in spring of 1995 when he stole all my gaming stuff to sell to fuel his need to buy weed so he could sell it and try to become the biggest weed dealer in the area during his high school days.....I'd still have this stuff around, boxed up safely because I always enjoyed keeping everything that came with the game (box, manual, artwork, extra goodies).

That day I lost (which includes all the old boxes, manuals and cartridge sleeves any game or system may have come with):
2 - NES systems with 4 controllers, 1 gun, 1 power pad, dozens of games
2 - SNES with 4 controllers, 1 super scope, 4-5 dozen games.
1 - SNES converted to use Super Famicom games. 2 controllers and even had a couple of Super Famicom games....I couldn't read the Japanese though, so I didn't get far in the games, only bought them because I hadn't seen them in the States before, figured why not.
1 - Sega Genesis with 2 controllers, 1 32X adapter, 4-5 dozen games between the 32X adapter and Genesis
2 - Game Boys, 1 GameBoy Light Boy, couple dozen games
1 - Atari 2600, 2 joystick controllers and 2 paddle controllers, a copy of every game (including the X rated ones). Only about half the games were actual cartridge games with original boxes, the other whole set of Atari games were pirated copies my uncle made through his work - we even had a pirated copy of the ET game....the X-rated ones were also pirated copies. I had a copy of every game, but half were pirated.

Out of all that stuff, the only thing that didn't get taken was just the Sega Genesis, a couple of games and 1 controller. Everything else was gone, along with about $600 from my room that was stolen and thousands of dollars of collectible football and baseball cards and countless signed memorabilia from Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears and Milwaukee Brewers that we obtained over almost a decade of doing card shows, going to games and training camps.

After the theft I lost the ambition I had to collect gaming things. Only real collection I have left is a good 7+ dozen physical copies of PC games, my old PS2 with a couple games and my PS3 with a couple games.

I wonder what all that stuff would be worth today were I allowed to have kept it......granted, none of it was in factory sealed condition and wouldn't fetch $114K, but still......makes you wonder.

I read about a guy who's most steady income is spending around $10k/year on LEGO kits and selling them 10+ years later for around $30-40k/year.
That would be $20-30k/year net. Not much of an income.

On another note, try doing this with your Steam collection :D

Given that you can still get 20 year old games on Steam, I think the value of old video games will decline significantly going forward.

What happened to gaming?

I remember those times... Well gaming just got a boom early 2000's, so you get to many games since the last 10-15 years. Thats what happened.

To many games nowadays to choose from. On one hand its great to have such variety, on the other hand you get overwhelmed by so many choice. And on how you will manage your limited time with endless games. Back then (late 80'-90's) your choice was much more selective, ergo the games you've played back then lingered in your memory longer.

It wouldn't even cover the postage let alone the unit!! I think they tend to go for about £200 to £500 or so depending on the spec, completeness and such like.. I believe there's a SX1 unit as well, can't remember... But I digress...

I'll always get physical media over downloadable content, I can't cope with my crap internet and such right now to deal with the 200GB downloads of the latest and greatest.. It just doesn't appeal to wait a week to have it downloaded... That said buy a game and then wait for all the updates to download. Either way sucks...

Plug a Mega Drive game in, let the other game download, forever bliss... Reminds me, Streets Of Rage 2 and Gunstar Hero's I need to have a go on......

Holy shit... I'm so sorry that happened to you -- and by a family member no less! Reading your post made me angry. Not at you, don't worry, but at your brother. Jesus. I don't blame you for having lost your ambition to collect gaming stuff. I think I would too. Not just that, but all the sports memorabilia!

I'm sorry my dude *hugs*
